When the original six deities came to Eralon it was an empty world, devoid of life and unfit for such. Yet by working together they made it livable and created the first life, but did not have the patience to wait the many years for that life to grow into something sentient they could actually rule over. So they traveled to the center of the planet to slumber and wait, and see what would come.
Humans evolved out of that first life over many thousands of years, and were the dominant species on the planet by the time the deities emerged back into the world. Without thought of the consequences they divided the six continents among themselves, promising to never interfere in another's territory, and began to rule the world.
For a time humans were fine with this, for really nothing changed in their day-to-day life except who they had to see or write to with grievances - the deities directly, or the creatures the humans named demons that served them. But as generations passed humans seemed to miss the days when they governed themselves and they sought a revolution, sought to overthrow the deities.
This resulted in what has since come to be known as the Great War. Casualties were high on each side, but ultimately the deities won. Not without a price, however, as the demons they created were beings of pure magic and the death of such great numbers of them throughout the world caused that magic to disperse across everything. When the metaphorical dust settled all manner of new creatures were born - vampires and werewolves, griffins and dragons, just to name a few.
The deities had their work cut out for them; they had to rebuild and remake their demon armies, keep a handle on the humans that would not take the loss and wanted still to try and incite rebellion, and now deal with all the new creatures that had emerged. To this end they also created two new continents, one to help all of them as a peacekeeping nation and one to send those who broke the laws and were otherwise considered unfit for society. Two demons were also created specifically for this purpose and raised to the level of the deities to rule these lands.
In time it was decided the best course of action was to treat humans as slaves and severely limit their populations in the world. The continents continued to flourish, now with an abundance of other sentient species to rule over, and things have continued with humans and a few other races oppressed through time.
Then, almost two hundred years ago, a great prophet Saw into the future and foretold the downfall of the deities. She spoke of twelve individuals, who have since collectively become known as the Chosen Ones, that would be gathered together. These individuals would have great powers, which together could be passed on to others to give them the power to defeat the deities once and for all and return the world to the rule of mortals. Smartly the prophet did not give the description of any of the Chosen Ones, though she did say that each one would be marked and no two would share the same race.
In the aftermath all the deities were sparked into action. Some began to track down anyone with any kind of marking and slaughter them preemptively, others increased their watches for any signs of rebel activity, and Lunnoar, the demon turned deity of Khelgard, chose to harbor the rebels. Lunnoar had an innate understanding that all things must come to an end, even the deities at some point, so all the others were simply delaying the inevitable.
It has taken her those two hundred years to build a rebellion and try to find the Chosen Ones, and the other deities are well aware of her actions. But for now they honor the truce not to interfere with the actions of other deities and are simply watching and waiting, doing what they can to destroy agents of the rebellion and keep Lunnoar from achieving her goal as much as possible.
