Emerald was born an Earth Fae to parents in Luminus after they immigrated there to use their own healing skills to help others. Living on the outskirts of the capital city, Emerald was raised with good morals and sent back to the Earth Nation to attend their healers school as soon as he was old enough to be enrolled.

Emerald loved healing, but he never liked people. He was always the quietest one in class, leaving his instructors to wonder sometimes if he was really fit to be in the school. But given that Emerald passed every test he was given with flying colors and was able to diagnose and fix serious issues that even some of the instructors couldn't they could do little but keep him on at the school. He graduated with honors as one of the best students in his class and then went to the small village of Lagina to get away from his parents, where the communication system was limited and they would no longer be able to influence him. Better yet the population was small and in need of a healer, and willing to accommodate him in all the ways he requested; he'd see the villagers about their complaints and let his skills speak for him, but otherwise wanted simply to be left on his own. At first the villagers weren't sure what to make of him, but he proved to be reliable and good at his job and never turned away anyone who came to him for help even if they couldn't pay. Instead he asked for them to simply give what they could, if they could, for the village elders had given him a house free of charge and the island where it was located was full of herbs and other natural things he could use in conjunction with his magic.

Still every now and again Emerald had to return to Jaderose for some basic supplies he couldn't get on the island such as bandages and the like. It was on one such trip that he met Pearl, seeking the man out away from the marketplace for a more private conversation. After all Emerald had recognized the spark between them as that of Soul Mates, having studied them as part of his medical training so he could know how to deal with someone who had lost theirs and how the mind and soul would affect the body in the aftermath. Pearl had felt something but wasn't sure what to make of it, though he knew the concept of Soul Mates and was also not surprised that Emerald might be his.

While Pearl was happy to have love in his life, they couldn't always be together. Pearl's true home was on a ship at sea, and Emerald had earned his loyalties in Lagina. So they agreed to be separate for a time, letting Pearl sail while Emerald stayed and deciding that the best thing they could do was have Pearl alert Emerald every time he'd be in Jaderose and have him take those few days to go back to the mainland to spend with together and make his supply runs at that time as well.
