15th of Jasna, 228 Prophecy
Pearl was born to a family of griffins living in the city of Arlyn. The city was once a prosperous human place that became swallowed up after the Great War as the magically enhanced forest began to reclaim anything that hadn't been built by creatures of magic. But the crumbling remains of the city made an easy home for magical creatures, griffins being just one of many.
Being only one of half a dozen children born to the mother, Pearl also had the misfortune of being the runt of the litter. He was all but ignored and had to fight for anything he wanted, food included. Yet it was all for the best, because he became the first of his siblings to hunt for their own food, the first to fly and the first to leave the nest. Not because he wanted to, but because he had to in order to survive. It didn't stop his parents from being proud of him, though, and teaching him at a young age how to obtain his human form.
Pearl was glad to be able to change to blend in with the rest of the world. As soon as he mastered maintaining his human form he made plans to leave and make his own way in the world, no one aware that the mark on his hand was more than just some kind of strange birthmark that he kept from his griffin heritage.
So Pearl made his way to Silvermoor and joined up with the crew of a cargo ship. Convincing the captain was easy enough once he showed off his griffin form, the man knowing that such a beast would be a great asset in protecting his ship from pirates and moving heavy shipments if the equipment failed.
It was a nice life for Pearl, he was respected finally for what he was but made no moves to use it for fear. Instead he made friends with everyone on board, laughed and drank with them as if he were no different than they were. The crew always loved that about him, because he was the captain's favorite and could have easily pushed them around but instead he chose to sleep where they slept, eat what they ate and help out with mundane upkeep and other chores around the ship.
Years on the boat turned Pearl into a hardened seafarer, and he was content with his life. He thought it would be how he was to spend his days, until one day when they docked in Ironhold and were given a bit of shore leave while the ship unloaded its cargo and the captain made his next deal more solid. Pearl was offered the chance to hit up a tavern with the rest of the crew, but he politely declined and headed off to just wander the city of Jaderose and take in all it had to offer.
While browsing the market for little trinkets to add to his collection Pearl had a chance run in with Emerald. Pearl had no idea about the concept of Soul Mates but Emerald did and knew to seek the other out in a more private setting to explain what that little spark between them meant. While Pearl was happy to have found a love that he didn't know up until that point had been missing, he was also deeply saddened for he longed to continue sailing the seas and Emerald could not go with him.
So they came to a general agreement; Pearl would make sure to come back to Jaderose whenever possible and spend his downtime with Emerald, and in return Emerald would stay in the city and wait for Pearl's inevitable return.
