Celestians are not born as most other creatures are. Instead, they are created directly by Rinnarl. There are only so many in existence, and they only live for about four hundred years before their bodies fade into dust and new ones are formed to replace them. So Topaz was born, formed as a small child by the Light Goddess and then sent off to the Tempest Combat Academy to train. The little celestian passed with flying colors, graduating with highest honors and top of their class ten years later. They excelled in academics and similar subjects, but really showed promise in his combat training. With badge in hand Topaz returned to Luminus to serve the Goddess as a protector, but that's when something went wrong.

The prophecy of the Chosen Ones was spreading, and the Light Goddess was concerned that one of her own might be one of the Chosen Ones, she began to have her celestians screened for signs of the birth marks. Topaz passed because the natural darkness of their skin and the gold swirls hid the mark, but they always felt something was wrong. Eventually the black outlines became clear to them and they were unsure what to do. If they was found out they'd be killed for sure, and if they died then all hope of defeating the Gods would be lost. Topaz needed to leave Luminus, but knew because they'd been created by the Goddess she could track them down, call them back or worse use them to find the others and wipe them all out in one sweep. So Topaz sought out a member of the underground, those trained in magic and the ways of doing things that were not legal in the nation. One such woman agreed to help them break their ties to the Goddess, and through a ceremony involving sacrifices and other unsavory things the magical bond that held Topaz to Rinnarl was severed.

The same night Topaz fled south to Zyma, feeling it was the only place they would be truly safe as the Light Goddess would not dare interfere with the Dark God's lands and cause an all out war and as long as they stayed under the radar there would be no problems.

Gravebridge also proved to be a great place to pick up private security work, giving Topaz what they needed to get by. One event was the opening of an art gallery, where Topaz met the artist and wasn't sure what to make of them. The succubus, however, knew what to make of Topaz and once the show was over made a point of tracking them down.

This was an exceptionally awkward conversation as celestians and other creations of the Gods were supposed to be made with whole souls instead of half souls like the rest of the sentient living creatures and so were not supposed to have Soul Mates. But Topaz was part of the prophecy along with the succubus, named Citrine, and so was different from others of their kind.

For a time afterwards the pair lived happily, but eventually it became evident that Khelgard was moving to make the prophecy a reality. Topaz knew staying with Citrine would be a bad idea so they left for Lito, trying to make their way in the other continent as well to avoid getting caught with their Soul Mate.
