When Onyx was born his parents weren't sure what to make of the mark on his chest, but they were quick to teach him not to show it to others because it was right over his heart which is the only weak spot on a dragon. Onyx obliged, and grew up learning how to hide himself from others so that he wouldn't be hurt.

At a young age the dragon showed a lot of promise for various things, but the one that stuck out most was his ability to sneak around. Having obtained his human form young so he could interact with beings other than dragons when his mother took him into town for errands, it was clear that he had a knack for sneaking off when the red dragoness wasn't looking and getting into a lot of places he shouldn't have been able to wind up in.

Realizing that their son had potential their parents sent him to Tempest to attend the Combat Academy. Specifically the section that taught about the art of assassination, for not everyone had the skills to remain hidden while making their kills.

Being an age that is roughly the equivalent of ten in human years, Onyx began his training. His mentor taught him everything about stalking a victim and taking them down silently when they thought they were their safest plus things like avoiding killing in crowded areas and how to slip through even the biggest of crowds unseen. Onyx also learned honor, and to never take jobs involving the innocent. Anyone of any gender, race or age could be evil and while for the most part it was the good who wanted the evil dead in some cases there were the evil who wanted the good dead so that they would not be an obstacle. Onyx taught himself how to pick up on lies and get all the information he needed from a client before taking on a job, as well as the art of learning all there was about his intended target before making the kill. If he found out he was being lied to and his victim was not who the client made them out to be, Onyx would always go back and begin stalking his client instead, making sure to leave them dead so that they could not hurt others because he knew if he told them he couldn't complete the job they would have no problem hiring someone else with a looser moral code.

The academy's libraries were open to the public during the days and one day while Onyx was studying he felt the urge to look at another who was also studying nearby. She looked odd, dressed brightly with rainbow colored hair, and young all things considered but something about her drew Onyx's attention. She felt it too, and introduced herself as Opal and explained to Onyx the concept of Soul Mates. Most grow up knowing about the general idea but aren't sure what to expect with it so it wasn't entirely foreign to Onyx to think that his Soul Mate might be a vampire.

Opal wanted to stay around for a while and Onyx had to complete his training, knowing that he still had some time before he was fully finished. Opal still had some research to do and afterwards they had planned to head to Gravebridge where they hoped to be safe and where Onyx could put his skills to use.

Then the Wind God made an open statement about the Chosen Ones and how any found in his lands he'd make a swift example of them. Onyx already knew because the subject had come up in Opal's studies and she'd pointed out their birth marks, and they both already knew that if they stayed together it would raise some suspicion and put them both at risk. So Opal returned home to Gravebridge alone while Onyx stayed back in Tempest to complete his training so he could graduate and have the freedom to head for Gravebridge to be with her.
