Opal was born to human parents shortly after the Great War. At the time there was an even bigger negative stigma associated with humans than there is in the present times. Her parents had a hard time finding anywhere to stay while the mother was pregnant, which lead to a hard birth that left the woman emotionally unstable. She ran off just days after the infant was born, leaving her in the care of the father who did not know how to handle the situation.

Not wanting the small child to die, he turned to the only option he had left and handed her to a group of friends who were headed to Khelgard where, supposedly, humans would be safe and treated as equals. He could not go, but he trusted the people to keep his daughter safe.

Sadly, upon their arrival in Khelgard the group was ambushed by vampires. With all the upheaval that he war caused, the Neutral Goddess could not keep a lid on all the activities going on in her lands and many things slid through the cracks. This was one of those incidents, and the vampires used the humans in a blood farm to keep themselves going. However, even vampires had standards. An infant was not only useless to them due to the small amount of blood in the body but killing a child was too distasteful for them.

After finding out that the child had no parents and her last hope was to be raised in the safety of Khelgard, the master vampire of the coven decided to raise her as his own. Vampires hadn't been around for long, maybe a decade or so, and many were still getting used to their powers and coming to terms with what they were. Still, he told his coven that no one was to touch the girl, and let the women raise her into the family. She was already known as Opal but her last name was changed to Ambrosia to fit her 'sire', just as with all the other vampires around her.

When she turned sixteen, another life-altering event happened. Vincent, her 'sire', was murdered. The Neutral Goddess was finally getting around to fixing all the things that had happened that she did not approve of. Vampires using humans as blood farms was one of those things, so she had Vince captured and publicly slaughtered him then scattered his coven to make an example of him. One of the girls who helped raise Opal took her before she could be taken by the Goddess, but the teen was in tears after hearing that her 'father' was dead and she would no longer see any of her 'family' again.

The only way to ease Opal's pain was to turn her, so the woman did just that and erased any memories of life before the turning point. So Opal was told stories of what her life had been, and raised to understand and accept her new powers. It took Opal many years to come to terms with what she was, but when she did the teen took an unexpected turn and began to pour herself into books, learning everything she could get her hands on. She spent hours in the local libraries studying, then would come home to her 'mother' and practice what she had picked up. The woman did not disagree with her child's want for knowledge, and in fact encouraged it to keep her from getting into less desirable things.

Because of her want for knowledge Opal moved around quite a bit, leaving her 'mother' behind in Gravebridge would be safe as vampires were openly accepted there. Opal traveled, keeping her vampirism a secret and studying everywhere she could as much as she could. If she wasn't positive she'd be discovered she would even have studied at the Tempest Combat Academy, so instead she settled for the city's libraries and it was there that she met Onyx while he was studying at the academy. For all her studies she knew plenty of the idea of Soul Mates and felt that spark right away, and she knew he did too. There wasn't a lot of time for romance when Onyx was either studying, training, or too exhausted for much but the pair made it work and Opal stuck around Tempest to see his training through.

When Onyx finished, however, the Wind God made an open statement about the prophecy and the Chosen Ones and said that if any were found among those at the academy or within he lands he would not hesitate to make an example of them. A show of power for the God whose lands were responsible for training the majority of the world's armed forces. Knowing they couldn't stick together because it would make them suspect the pair reluctantly split; Onyx stayed in Tempest to avoid making it look like he was fleeing and Opal returned home to Gravebridge to spend some time with her 'mother' until things died down and Onyx could safely come to her.
