In Eralon the gods created life, and thus also created the way in which souls inhabit the living. Over the many years that they have lived they have decided the best way to do this is to make it so that each soul is divided into two pieces when it is born into the world, each half finding its own sentient being to inhabit.

Over time as one has died before the other and such this has led to Soul Mates being of many different ages, as one survives and the other half is born again but they do not find one another before the older one dies and is reborn again.

The exceptions to this rule are the demons created by the gods and, of course, the gods themselves. This is because demons are pulled from what few whole souls are in the Soul Stream when they are created, making them whole to start and never knowing or understanding what it's like to miss half of themselves and want to seek it out so that they can focus on their duties of serving their deities.

The Soul Stream itself is a mysterious place, having only one gateway into the world on the highest mountain near Luminus. No mortal has seen it and survived; the way is heavily guarded, and those that have been taken there by a God do not come back. The only thing known about it is what few demons will speak of the place, as they see it when they are born and some celestians even patrol up there on a regular basis and will talk from time to time. From what they say it is simply a gateway of endless energy through which all souls come from and thus must return to, and beyond that is simply impossible to describe as their minds cannot comprehend what they have seen and they do not have the words for the beauty and yet terrifying existence of such a place.
