Ruby doesn't know who her father is, and in fact knows nothing aside from the fact that he is deceased according to her mother. Having never had the man in her life she does not miss him or wonder about him, her mother more than made up for his absence by showering the girl with affection and introducing her to things that would keep her mind elsewhere. The older centaur ran a flower shop and as soon as Ruby was old enough to understand she began to teach her the ways of growing, tending and selling the flowers.

Then, one day a pack of centaurs that had been hunting in the woods near the outskirts of Khelgard brought in the strangest thing in to her shop - a young child, seemingly human and as filthy as if they'd never had a proper bath. The leader told Ruby that the boy had been found in the forest and from what they could gather the child had been raised by a pack of wolves who then threw them out of the pack because they had reached the age of being able to start their own according to their society. But being so young and only a few notches above a human they were not able to handle being on their own, so they had taken the child in and hoped that because Ruby was of such a similar age Serena would be able to raise them as well.

The older centaur reluctantly agreed, taking in the small child and giving them a bath to clean them up. They turned out to be a mix, the fluffy tail and folded ears hidden under the grime of life in the wild, but Serena still saw fit to keep them. Even Ruby, who at that age was somewhat shy around strangers and took time to truly warm up to others, had taken an instant liking to the little one and agreed to help take care of them. She didn't know it at the time, but she was a Chosen One and so were they and fate had seen kind enough to allow them to know one another earlier than most who felt the bond of Soul Mates. Of course the kids didn't understand it, they just knew that they felt a desire to be near one another at all times and even being in different rooms seemed to cause them to ache. But the two learned to deal with it, make the most of their time together and cope with daily life.

As they grew up it became increasingly obvious that Turquoise, as the mix had been named by Serena, was unable to deal with normal society. They had temper problems around customers and once they were not allowed to work in the shop with Ruby anymore they spent most of their time in the back yard with the animals. Ruby felt bad for them, and begged her mother to do something to help Turquoise since she now considered them to be like her sibling. Serena agreed, and used her contacts to get Turquoise a job at an animal shelter nearby. There they could care for animals with minimal contact from the other workers, and both she and Ruby hoped it would improve their attitude and help them learn to deal with the world they were now living in.

Things went on like this for a time, Ruby eventually taking over the shop while her mother worked in the back and helped out. Turquoise worked the shelter each day and came home every night to Ruby. Then, one day, word of the prophecy and the Chosen Ones reached Serena and she knew that Ruby was part of the group because of the lotus shaped mark on her hip. And she knew that Turquoise was one too because of the paw print birthmark on their knee. Serena also knew it was better for the pair to separate, because as Soul Mates they could easily be used against one another - if one was captured or in danger and the other knew they would take reckless risks to try to save them, and that was what the Gods were counting on.

So while Ruby stayed in Jaderose to keep running the shop Turquoise went to Silvermoor to work at an animal shelter in the city. Being apart has been rough on both of them, but as long as it means they'll be safe until things die down it's worth being able to reunite alive and safe as soon as possible.
