Di was born to human parents, the pair thinking the birth mark on her thigh was nothing more than that. It became readily apparent, however, that Di had a special connection to music; she was humming before she could talk and trying to play instruments before she could walk. Her parents encouraged this, hoping one day she might be good enough to make that into her living and be able to have a better life than they did with her popularity.

When Di turned eighteen her powers blossomed further, showing that she could also cast magic with her musical skills. Weaving magical energy into notes or song came as naturally to her as playing the music itself, and she was sent to study at a musical college in Luminus. Shortly thereafter she met Amethyst, both understanding the concept of Soul Mates and what the spark between them meant.

However, Amethyst's home was at the Tempest Combat Academy and he was only in Luminus on a visit to a friend who needed his medical help. He couldn't stay because he was a water demon and generally unwelcome in the lands of the Light Goddess so he would not be able to continue to be employed and he also knew it wasn't fair to ask Di to leave her schooling to come with him back to Tempest. So they agreed to go their separate ways for the time being, seeing each other when they could and waiting for Di to finish school so she could make her way to Tempest and stay there with Amethyst and find work in the city.
