The Sovereign is less a person and more a title, passed from individual to individual over time. There must always be a Sovereign, and when a new one is born the world ends.

The previous Sovereign was a star elf named Galen, who took the position when he and his friends killed the one that existed in their time. It was just one more step in the endless cycle; like those before him Galen watched his friends and loved ones die while he lived on, unable to die even when he wanted to due to the immortality inflicted upon him by taking the title. He went mad with time, and though rumor has it in the last decades of his reign he found someone to love once again that person either vanished or died and it started the downward spiral that eventually led to his demise.

When Galen was killed his mantle taken up by the tiefling Zaela. Her husband became a god at the same time, ensuring they would be immortal together and hopefully ending the cycle. Thanks to the goddess who sacrificed herself at the time the world did not end, and for the first time ever the world has known a new Sovereign without the destruction that followed.

Zaela and her husband still reign, though as immortals that is a relatively young rule. Only time will tell if they will be better than those before them.
