Like many afflicted by the Mystic's Curse, Aly was just a teenager when he had his first prophetic visions. He didn't know what they meant, he just knew that they scared him; visions of blood, of death, of the people he knew brutally slaughtered. He did not tell anyone of these dreams, believing them to be just that even if they were horrifying.

Then his transformation kicked in. Aly doesn't remember anything after that, just the smell of blood and smoke. He woke in the morning with the carnage all around him, and agents of The Sovereign Galen rushing in. Not to kill him, but because some of the other mystics working for the Sovereign Galen had seen the visions of Aly as one of their own and the agents were hoping to pick him up before the transformation struck.

They were, obviously, too late. And despite the fact that they told Aly what had happened he could not remember at all. In some ways he hoped he'd never have to; while he was whisked away to Tavnoin and would not face any consequences for the deaths at his hands, Aly could escape the guilt of what he had done.

Alcohol was always helpful in that end, helping him to forget and to move on with his life. To cope with what the Sovereign Galen wanted them to see, and the blackouts every time he transformed.

It was the Sovereign Zaela and her adventuring party that saved Aly and the other mystics, ending their curse while allowing them to keep their powers. While they stayed in the valley where the adventurers made their home for a while, when Zaela took over the title of Sovereign and Mazen asked if the mystics could continue their lives under her reign Aly was more than happy to go back to his life as it had been; alcohol, anyone he wanted in his bed, and the carefree life he had before without the gilded cage. He could leave the castle, have actual relationships, and as the Sovereign Zaela asked they only use their powers to see potential disaster coming Mazen insists they hold their clairvoyance circles once a week to check but otherwise Aly doesn't have to use his powers if he doesn't want to which is just fine by him.
