Selki's mother was an infamous monster hunter who retired after sustaining a wound that left her incapable of continuing in combat. Operating out of The Nightfall Nest in her 'retirement', having a child was another foot in the grave of her career.

As such, she never really treated Selki as her child nor cared much for him. She resented him, and the injury, for putting an end to her ability to help other people. And in such a rough area, it was no wonder that Selki grew up learning he had to be self-reliant and self-sufficient.

Then, his first transformation hit. The teen was lucky to survive, but only because instinct told him to run rather than stay and fight. He collapsed when it was over, exhausted and somewhere out near the Defier Islands. Those who came across him understood what he was, and they were quick to contact The Sovereign Galen to tell him they had found another mystic.

Selki was reluctant to go, but he understood his options; live in service to the Sovereign Galen or live his life on the run and hope during his transformations he wouldn't accidentally hurt anyone or get himself hunted and killed.

He served, telling himself it was necessary for his survival until Zaela and her adventuring party freed all the mystics from their curse. While he stayed with the group as a whole until Zaela took up the mantle of Sovereign, when given the choice Selki decided to leave. He didn't know what he was going to do with himself, but being free to roam and live his life was better than living in servitude.
