Under The Sovereign Galen the Moonlight Guard were a band of hired mercenaries that served as his personal guard.

The company existed long before the Sovereign Galen recruited them. Becoming part of the Guard was never easy, though, and the trials to join killed most or made them drop out. These trials, and the elite individuals that were recruited through that process, is what prompted the Sovereign Galen to ask them to become his guard.

When Zaela took over she was smart enough to know she didn't know how to deal with everything. She began to ask the various heads of the organizations that had worked with her predecessor what they would like to do, and the head of the Guard wanted to say on with the contract the Sovereign Galen had given them as it was quite lucrative.

While the Sovereign Zaela was willing to allow that, she did force the Guard to change their practices. Most notably the idea that retirement was taboo and would lead to blacklisting from all the other mercenary companies. Still would few choose to retire after everything they went through to join, but at least they had the choice and that was all the Sovereign Zaela wanted.
