Growing up, Itsuki was a timid boy who often spent his days painting in his home instead of playing with the other children his age. He proved to be quite talented in art, winning many competitions at the local and provincial levels, which attracted both admiration and jealousy from his peers. Despite this, Itsuki was also envious of his peers' strength and often felt that he was lagging behind. As such, he joined the Duskwing Syndicate in the hopes that training with them would make him grow stronger so he could protect those he loved.

Not long after Itsuki joined them, he bonded with Sen after one of the young man's paintings caught the kinshi's eye. The two grew closer thanks to their shared love for art, with Sen becoming akin to an art mentor to Itsuki. Inspired by Itsuki's determination, Sen asked the artist to become his Champion, to which Itsuki gladly agreed.
