Tanith was born into a circus family. She was taught how to walk the rope and bend, curve, and twist her body. As she grew she became the most talented acrobat her family and the people had seen in a very long time. Her mother would switch her from the rope to the swings almost every other week. She was good on her feet, had good balance, was quiet and beautiful and deadly. Her brothers taught her swordsmanship, more for fun than anything. They traveled all over the world, becoming world-renowned One day, while they were in a small town in Vethea, Tanith was sent to run an errand. When she came back, a little less than an hour later, her family had been brutally slaughtered and their tents pillaged. All their money and supplies were gone, probably to be sold. Her brothers and fathers and mothers all lay dead on the ground. Tanith, fifteen years old, was terrified and angry and devastated. The one item that remained, was her brother's sword, a small thing, but he had loved it dearly. Tanith took the sword, returned the items her mother had sent her to buy, and bought a shovel with all the money she had left. She dug her own families graves and wept for two days before she took up a disguise as a slave and got on a ship headed to Ecra. She was chained and put in a cage with a hundred other slaves and on that damned ship for three weeks, where she was barely fed. There was no bucket to relieve themselves in, only the floor. It stunk of human waste and puke and blood. Once a day someone would be whipped in front of the others. The ship docked and they were hauled out in a line into the labor camp. Tanith in her rags pulled her brother's sword out from under her clothes in the sheath she had managed to keep hidden. She slit three of the guard's throats and narrowly managed to escape in a dead sprint before they put her in the camp. She ran through forests for weeks, hunting for her own food and searching for water, until she stumbled into Versalis, Ecra's Capitol city. It was stunning from the hill she stood on, far away from the inner city, but once she reached it she could see the real horrors. She hung low for a while, her parent's deaths, and the weeks she spent on that slaver ship haunting her every moment. She took a job as a courtesan and made a decent amount of money. She steered clear of any contracts, though she was offered once to work at the Doll House. She had heard horror stories of the woman who ran it and strayed far away. One day, about a year of her living in Versalis, she caught word of a growing Rebel organization. She found out where their meeting would be, The Devil's Tavern, and what day, and showed up. She met Verena, Adeline's sister, and Karan, Kenna, and Caspian. She told Verena her story, and her skillset and Verena decided to let her stay at the palace. She was made into a Lady in Waiting and lived there under that cover.
