"Yep." Mycah nodded and followed him towards the door. They grabbed their backpack on the way out– yes, Winter already had the money, but they liked having some stuff with them in case everything went wrong.
"Yep." Mycah nodded and followed him towards the door. They grabbed their backpack on the way out– yes, Winter already had the money, but they liked having some stuff with them in case everything went wrong.
Winter held the door for them, closing it as they got out of the house. "We need to find a hardware store." he said. "Grocery store won't have the right tools."
"Agreed. There should probably be one on the main street." Mycah nodded. They didn't really know all that much about fixing sinks and were glad that Winter seemed to know a few things.
Winter nodded as he walked, remembering the last time he had helped fix up a house. He had fixed it up with Lily, smiling and laughing as they made plans for a future that he killed. He let out a breath.
Mycah kept touching the pocket the twig was in and alternated between brushing their hair into their eyes and tucking it behind their ears. They didn't totally trust the magic amulet just yet and averted their eyes from the first person that passed them. But they stared at the second one, and that person didn't seem to do a double-take at their eyes.
Winter was quiet, looking around for a hardware store. He figured he'd just have to grab a toolbox from there and hope that it would have everything he needed.
Feeling a little more confident of their amulet, Mycah started looking around for somewhere Winter could get tools. They didn't see any shops near them, but a shop up ahead looked a bit promising.
Winter continued walking, looking around. "I don't need much. Just a typical toolkit should be fine." he said after a moment.
"Okay," Mycah said, nodding. As they got closer to the promising shop, Mycah frowned. "Would that have what you need?" They asked, gesturing at the shop. It looked like it was some sort of garden/home improvement place, but it might have what Winter wanted.
Winter looked for a moment, then shrugged. "We can go see." he replied, heading towards the store.
Mycah nodded and followed Winter towards the store. It would be really nice if this shop had the toolbox that Winter wanted, but they wouldn't be too annoyed if it didn't. They needed to get used to all these people at some point.
Winter headed inside, holding the door for Mycah and looking around. Once he located the tool section, he headed over to it.
Mycah entered the store, giving Winter a thankful smile. They glanced around the store, then followed Winter. This place reminded them of Allx. He loved going to garden stores or greenhouses and getting seeds to plant in the small garden he'd created.
Winter looked at the tools, and eventually picked out a toolkit. "This should have everything I need for now." he said, looking over at Mycah.
Mycah tore their eyes from the display of seed packets to look at the toolkit Winter had picked out "Oh, good." They nodded in approval, though Winter probably didn't need it. "Shall we go check out now?"
Winter nodded. "Yeah." he replied, heading towards the checkout and letting out a breath.
Mycah followed Winter towards the checkout area, pausing for a few seconds to smile nostalgically at a picture of tomatoes. Allx had loved those, and his plants had yielded so many they were all practically swimming in grape tomatoes.
Winter stopped when Mycah did, glancing over and raising his eyebrows. "You alright?"
"Huh?" Mycah looked from the tomatoes to Winter and blinked. "Oh, yeah. Memories," They said simply. "Allx was a gardener." A small, sad smile spread across their face.
He nodded a little bit. "Ah. Yeah. I'm sorry." he replied softly. "I know it's…hard. To lose people you care about."
"Yeah. Thanks." Mycah nodded, then shook their head. "Let's buy these tools." They headed towards the registers, trying to keep the flood of memories from overtaking them. Breaking down in the middle of a store wasn't something they wanted to do.
Winter nodded, heading towards the registers and keeping an eye on Mycah. He hoped the other would be alright. He really did know that this was hard.
Mycah gave the person behind the register a smile, then stepped out of the way so Winter could pay for the toolbox. Instead of focusing on the fact that Allx was never coming back– why did that have to hit them now, of all times– they started humming. There was no magic in that music except comfort this time, though.
Winter glanced over for a moment, then turned back to the counter. He paid for the tools, taking them with a faint smile and heading towards the exit.
Mycah tapped their foot to the beat of the song in their head as Winter paid, then followed him towards the door. The song was making them feel a little better, as was getting out of the store.
