Zander had been laying low and watching the village with a close eye. Camping out on a mountain looking down with his binoculars in his hand, sitting against his dragon. He mostly kept an eye on the library where Mara had wandered into. He couldn't wait to get rid of her and the dragons.
Valkyrie neared where Zander was, but at first, she didn't see him, but when she did, she immediately turned wary and hostile. She had Valhalla dive quickly towards him, her halberd ready to swing.
"You trespassed on the wrong territory, buddy!" she shouted.
Zander didn't move, not even a flinch. He looked up at Valkyrie. "I'm not hurting anybody." He set the binoculars down and stood up. He was a good foot taller than Valkyrie. "Or is just relaxing a crime?"
"It is a crime when you're on protected land, and also what? Perhaps spying on us?" She tilted her head towards the binoculars.
Valhalla smacked Valkyrie with his tail once she had slid down off his back.
Valkyrie, be courteous. This is the man from my vision that would save us.
Valkyrie took a step forwards. "Just who are you exactly? I might be willing to spare you if you answer correctly."
"I'm Zander Hunter and I'm here to save the human race." He smiled and held out a hand. "Nice to meet you." His golden piercings shone brightly in the risen sun. His dragon laid by his feet not caring about this conversation.
"Save them from what, exactly?" Valkyrie asked, gripping her halberd tighter and refusing to shake his hand just yet. She looked behind him. "You have… a dragon?"
"Yes I have a dragon." He patted his dragons head. "And do you not know about the dragons dangerous intentions. They maybe close to the humans but the are still wild animals and dangerous who knows when they will get tired and start fighting back." He lowered his hand. "Before that happens I'm going to get rid of them." A low growl came from the dragon at his feet. "With the exception of some."
"Of course I know. A dragon killed my youngest brother," Valkyrie replied, "Not intentionally, but she was scared. Wild. She killed thirty-something people- and those are just the ones whose names were known."
"Here." He handed her some files. "Its a list of dragon-human bindings attacks. Including Mara's mother, assuming you met Mara." He looked out over the town.
"Does she know?" Valkyrie asked, opening the files, only to then realize she could barely read them. She pretended to take in the information, when really all she was taking in was the sheer numbers of people who had been attacked.
"You know, I've had more than my fair share of doubts about dragons, but at least I make good money here. I'm able to support my family back home. Trying to destroy dragons…? Now, that can be a lucrative trade too, should we strip them of their scales and teeth, and if we can use their bones. But it's not steady, and I don't think our dragons would appreciate us killing their brethren. They could all too easily turn on us and kill us if we do that."
"I know I'm good. I may not be able to actually talk to my dragon like the rest of you, but we've come to an understanding." He looked over at Valkyrie's dragon. "Do you have anything to worry about?" Her dragon has pretty eyes. "All I want is dragons gone and Mara, she's not exactly who she says she is."
"I don't really care much about Mara one way or another, but I would like people to be safe from dragons, and here they are, doing nothing but protecting them. We can't exactly do anything as two individuals, can we?"
Valhalla let out a deep rumble. Oh, it's not like you're just two individuals. There are plenty of others out there who feel the same. You should listen to him. He's right, you know?
"You mean you're not against your own kind being killed?"
My own kind has taken up reliance on humans to survive. That's no way to live, and I believe it needs to be stopped.
"Then why did you even pick me?"
Because I knew your story, and I thought that maybe you would be able to help me- more as an agreement than a co-dependence thing.
Valkyrie looked at Zander again. "You make a fair point, but how are we going to do this?"
"Attack on the village soon." He eyes moved from Valhalla to Valkyrie. "I need a plan on how to execute it and where the weaknesses are and having someone on the inside will help."
"So there are more people involved, huh?" Valkyrie asked, "I guess I can be your inside informer, but if things start looking bad, you had better believe I'm going to bail. I'll start by saying that we are very vulnerable from the top. If you send in guys from a higher elevation and drop down towards the middle of the village, assuming everyone has dragons, then that should do it. It'll cause mass panic, and there's no direction for them to push you back."
"Perfect." A sinister smile appeared on his face. "So, your in?" He held his hand out one more time. "Also when is the best day to strike?" He has been watching but didn't know when to strike.
"How soon will everyone be ready? Because I'm thinking soon- before we can arouse too much suspicion. Two days from now, in the middle of the night, when patrols are lessened," Valkyrie suggested, cautiously taking the man's hand, "But again, if things go to hell, I'm out."
"You're welcome to leave whenever and we've been ready for a while." He wrote something on a piece of paper and stuffed it in his pocket. "Can you help me with something? Can you try and keep Mara as close to you as possible and gain her trust, it will be easier for me to get her if she's near you." He wanted her to get close to Valkyrie. "And can you get her to trust the other less?"
“Easy. I’m already crafting her armor. She lives close to me. I’m sure I can do something,” Valkyrie said, “But besides that, she’s new here, and I can spill some dirt about the others.”
"Great, thank you. I guess I'll see you in two days." He smiled. "Partner." He sat back down with his binoculars and went back to watching.
Mara went through the books finding all the hand written ones. She could tell with just one look she knew which ones were hand written.
