Jay chuckled. "I better be. Leo should still be at the campsite. I hope." He shrugged his shoulders.
Jay chuckled. "I better be. Leo should still be at the campsite. I hope." He shrugged his shoulders.
She nodded, hoping her puppy friend was still there as well. The woods all still looked the same to her as they walked and she began to wish that the campsite wasn't much further mostly because her shoulders and arms were screaming at her for putting this much strain on them with walking with the crutches.
Jay kept leading her through the woods. "You doing alright?" he asked, after a few minutes of walking in silence.
"I'm fine," She answered with only a hint of truth in the answer, experimenting with trying to hold her weight differently on the crutches, putting more weight on her hands despite the strength it took. As long as the camp was close she would be fine, that was true, but too much longer and it would leave her with shoulders that would be immensely sorer than they already were.
Jay nodded, and kept walking. "Alright. So long as you're sure, I guess." he replied with a shrug.
"How much further?" She looked up at him as she followed behind him, turning her attention back to watching her footing after only a few seconds. Tripping on a log was the last thing she wanted to do.
Jay shrugged. "A minute or so? I think?" he replied, looking at her.
Delia nodded, then nodded again as she continued walking, asking one more question to break the silence, "Do you think we'll have enough to eat or should we try to catch something to eat and save our few cans for later?"
Jay shrugged slightly. "I don't know. i can try and hunt, but all our shouting probably scared anything here away."
"Canned food it is then." She finally saw the edge of the clearing a ways away but even then a smile broke onto her face at the fact that they were close to being back with all their gear and Leo.
Jay nodded. "Right. I'll hunt later, I guess. See if I can start teaching Leo, so he can start pulling his own weight."
Teaching Leo to hunt would be useful, especially if he was able to catch food and help Jay. "That sounds good," She said as they finally made it to their bags and she sat right back where she had before, painfully aware of how little she could help with food gathering with talking about Leo getting taught to help.
Jay nodded. "Yeah. I'm not quite sure how to teach him, but I'll try" he replied with a shrug. "I'll do my best."
"I think teaching him how to play fetch and listen to commands might be good to start," She suggested, knowing that at least him being able to fetch could help when teaching the puppy how to hunt. Said puppy bounded over quickly when Jay and Delia got back, his tail wagging happily as he jumped on them and looked for any sort of attention.
He nodded in agreement, smiling at Leo. "Yeah. I don't need him to kill things, just find them and bring them back."
Delia looked up at him and smiled, "If you want you can go start training him, I think we have enough wood here that I can make a fire and warm up whatever food we have left."
Jay nodded. "Alright." he whistled at Leo. "Come on, boy." looking at Delia again, he said, "I'm going to take him a bit of a ways away to work."
"Ok, be safe." She watched Leo trot over to Jay and smiled gently before starting to get the wood set up for a fire. There wasn't a ton of wood, but it would be enough for a small fire to heat the can of soup she had found in the bottom of her bag.
Jay nodded. "I will." He led Leo along, into the woods, and began to work with the puppy.
Delia watched them walk away, lighting the fire after a few failed attempts and then moving on to the problem of getting the can open. She knew how to do it, but her knife wouldn't poke through the top of the lid for some reason.
Jay kept working with Leo, being as patient as he could be. He kept his hat on, adjusting it a little bit.
Struggling, she eventually did get the can open, muttering a string of curses towards the lid as she cut and put it over the flames once she was satisfied. Now all there was to do was wait until it heated up and for Jay and Leo to come back.
Jay and Leo eventually came back, Leo bounding by Jay's side, tail wagging and tongue hanging out of his mouth.
"How did training go?" She asked when the two of them returned, and even though she had already eaten, two thirds of the can was still left carefully warming over the fire for them. Delia smiled gently and leaned back on her pack, watching the two of them.
Jay sighed softly. "Ugh. He's got a long ways to go." he replied, shaking his head and looking at Leo. Leo wagged his tail happily, looking up at Jay.
