"I've been trapped before" said Arthur, "I just have to wait one more year, I'm 19 now. One more year and their own law will set me free"
"I've been trapped before" said Arthur, "I just have to wait one more year, I'm 19 now. One more year and their own law will set me free"
"I see.." he sighed, smiling weakly, turning his attention back to the flames.
It was stupid to assume I could have helped him.. Oh well, didn't I say earlier that he isn't any of my business?
Arthur flipped the meat again, pleased that the fire that licked his hand and arm wasn't harming him. It's nice of Soren to propose helping me out of this stupid country. he thought, But I can't let him take that risk
"So….." Soren said after a moment of awkward silence. "What do you.. want to talk about?"
Was that seriously the best thing I could come up with?? Wow I am seriously losing my touch!
"I dunno" said Arthur, "There's so much to talk about I dunno where to start!"
"What's the first thing that comes to mind?" he shrugged, smiling softly. "That's how I make conversation, even if it's stupid or doesn't make sense without context."
"Like I said," said Arthur pulling the meat out of the flames, "I don't know"
He's so stubborn.. and weird.. Lord, why have you cursed me with this kid. I don't think I could understand him if I tried and yet.. I'd be willing to risk it all for him. What has he done to me?
Soren kept his eyes on the flames, watching them dance methodically. He remembered a time when he was surrounded by the flames of a circle as he prepared to meet his father in hell for the first time. That was the day he was taught how to summon the demon in him, transform, become the demon in him. Soren had put all that behind him since starting school, he'd closed himself away from fire for fear of triggering his demon, but the flames before him were soothing compared to the flames of hell, and if anything they put his mind to rest.
"Well. either way food's ready" said Arthur, handing him his share.
"Thank you.." Soren didn't have the heart to tell Arthur he doesn't eat meat, but accepted it with a smile anyway. He kept it next to him, sighing as he looked back up to the sky. "I never realised how beautiful the stars are."
Arthur munched on some of it, swallowing he answered, "Agreed, the stars were always one of my favorite things about being out here."
"My mother once told me, when I was very young, that the stars tell stories to people who are lost or in the wild in order to keep them company." a gentle smile spread on his lips. It had been a while since he'd thought about his mother's odd comments. "Though I don't know if that's actually true, she is a human after all."
"might be" said Arthur, sighing as he turned his attention to the flames. Sighing he reached a hand into the flames, pulling it out again he was suddenly holding a fireball. Concentrating hard he kept the flames to his hand, shaping it to the shape of a star. Concentrating more he divided it in two, then four. stopping a moment you could see how hard he was focusing.
Soren gaped in horrified awe, he had never seen anyone shape stars out of fire. "They're beautiful.. how do you do that?"
The flames suddenly vanished from Arthur's hand as his concentration wavered. He sighed disappointedly. "My original powers were that of a fire elemental.." he said sadly,
"Your original? What happened to them?" He'd never heard of someone having powers that weren't the ones they were born with.
Arthur didn't answer instead pulling out his amulet, it was silver, set with a red gem. but the gem was cracked, and the crack seemed to be eminating a dark mist throughout the jewel. He reached over into the flames and began to try and manipulate them again. Sighing he gave up.
Soren gasped quietly, his eyes softening as he looked directly at Arthur. "Does this have to do with how you got stuck with Discordion?"
"Yup" said Arthur, "More or less"
"Do you want to talk about it?" he rubbed the back of his head. Soren wanted to know more about who Arthur was, something about the boy interested him.
What am I doing?! He is none of my business! Damn emotions..
Arthur shrugged, unsure of what to do right that moment.
"N-never mind then.." he sighed, resting his head on a tree behind him. "You're not the easiest person to talk to, you know that right?"
"I don't try to be difficult," said Arthur flopping back to look up at the stars.
"I'm sorry i didnt mean it in an offensive way." Soren mumbled, his stomach churning. "I'm not great with words alright.."
Arthur grinned, "I never took any offense though," he said. "I know I'm not exactly being open, I just, don't really know how to explain what happened, honestly I wish it never had…"
