Soren's attention shifted to the cluster of die on his bed. What he was reading confused him, and only prompted more questions that he wanted to ask Arthur, but he didn't want to pry into a past that didn't concern him. He sighed, shaking his head. "So what do you propose I do next towards mastering my umbrakinesis?"
"Well it seems your first issues are actually being able to use it on command," he said thoughtfully, "And being able to keep your shadow under control"
"State the obvious why don't you, I think it is very clear that I can't use it on command. Also the thing with my own shadow only happens if I allow it into my body, which is usually never."
"Then you need to learn how to use it on command!" said Arthur. "I know you can't now, but you have to learn or they'll never let you graduate…"
"Never mind not letting me graduate, if I can't control it by the time graduation comes around I'll be completely stripped of all my powers." His gaze drifted to the photo on his desk, and a pained sigh left his mouth.
"Hey at least it won't kill you" said Arthur glumly.
He threw Arthur a look of utter disgust. He was not amused. "I'd rather die than have to live without my powers. They're a part of who I am, and no on can live with parts of them missing."
"Ha ha" said Arthur sarcastically "I meant it literally.. you will still physically be alive if they strip you of your magic. If that happens to me… well…" he let it hang.
"If it happens to you then you won't be able to continue your search for your family? That's the kind of response I'd expect from you honestly." he chuckled, sliding a glance to the blue die from the corner of his eye. Damn it, why did I mention that? He could suspect something!
"I know where my family is," said Arthur, "I left to try and figure stuff out on my own.. No.. if they try to strip me of my magic, if that were to happen…" Arthur didn't even wanna think about it, alex and the others would never forgive me if I got myself killed…
The dice weren't always right, Soren knew not to put his trust in them, but he also knew that Arthur was keeping things hidden. He sighed, scooping the dice back into the pouch.
"This has been fun, but perhaps we should go back out there. I'm not confident that I can control my own shadow, but hopefully you can help me with that?" He stood up from his bed, catching a glimpse of the setting sun. "We don't have much time left." He took Arthur's hand again, dragging him through the halls of curious students and back out to the forest.
Arthur jogged to keep up, "Don't be so impatient!" He said with a smirk.
"Well unless you want a basically useless halfling in front of you, again, then I think it's only fair that I'm inpatient. And get that smirk off your face.." He slid a quick scowl in Arthur's direction, gripping his hand tighter before they reached the spot they practiced in before. "Tell me what you need me to do and tell me now. We have an hour until the sun goes down completely."
Arthur summoned his blade once more, "Try attacking me, focus your power in short blows."
Soren reached into his core, drawing in any shadow he could to his fingertips. In one hand manifested his shadow blade, and shards formed in the other. "Which one should I use?"
"Either one" said Arthur, erecting a shield.
He nodded as the shards instead engulfed his arm. He twirled the blade in his hand, taking a deep breath.
I will not take in my own shadow. Everything will be fine.
"Okay!" He focused his eyes on Arthur. "I'm ready."
"Then what are you waiting for?!" asked Arthur, summoning aura orbs.
"For you to make the first move, I want to see what you have." He shrugged, grinning. "But I mean if you're scared of going first then I understand."
Arthur raised an eyebrow, "You're gonna regret this" he said tauntingly. Lowering his shield he let his Chaos magic run wilder than before. "Chaos burst!" he sent a volley of Aura orbs, and then a burst of pure aura towards Soren. Then he picked up speed and lunged for Soren with his blade.
(Did I ever mention that on a scale of 1-10 Arthur is about an 8-9 in skill with a sword?)
(No you did not!!)
Soren deflected the orbs with his engulfed arm, the shadows scattering after being hit with the pure aura. He put all his energy and remaining shadows into his own blade, parying Arthur's attacks as best as he could.
I need to keep this up until the sun is down, please let me be strong enough until then!
Arthur broke away from Soren, landing on his toes. "Can you keep it up?" he asked, summoning whips of Aura from the ground, and sending them to attack Soren. Arthur himself warped behind Soren and attacked from there.
"I'll sure as hell try." He hissed, swivelling around just in time to block Arthur's next attack. He could feel the connection in his core fading with the sunlight. Not now!!!
The blade vanished, sending Soren flying backwards to the ground.
