"I'll contact our specialist…" the lady assured him skeptically. "Um, why don't you have a seat in the waiting room?"
"I'll contact our specialist…" the lady assured him skeptically. "Um, why don't you have a seat in the waiting room?"
"Sure." He led Kate to the waiting room and into a chair next to him. "While you're waiting, maybe I can try to refresh your memory?", he asked.
"You can try," she spat, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.
"Last I saw you we were heading to your parents house for dinner. We were at my apartment when some guys came, stole you, and put you in their van. Then two days later there you are, standing by the bus stop. I was so happy to see you. I thought I'd never see you again. I've cried for you." August stopped for a moment to see her reaction.
Her expression could've been carved out of stone.
He sighed and carried on. "I'm August Ren, your boyfriend. My favorite animal is a wolf, color is a tie between black and green, band is Twenty One Pilots, I play baseball and sing and do martial arts, I love anime. My most prized possession is this emerald necklace…" He held up his necklace to show her. "My grandma gave it to me in the hospital before she passed away. She and you are my favorite people ever… Now time to talk about you." He paused again.
She showed no immediate reaction.
"You are Katherine Mae Harrold, but you go by Kate. You are eighteen and your birthday is August tenth. Your favorite color is teal, food is pizza, drink is… vanilla shake correct? Favorite movie is Steel Magnolias, favorite artist is Britt Nicole. You like field hockey." He stopped to think.
"Your favorite animal is a chinchilla. Your favorite item, not to brag, is a ring that you wear on your pinkie finger. I gave that to you on our second date. Your favorite season is definitely summer… mine too. Your parents are named Benjamin and Jennifer and your siblings are named Lizzy and Jacob plus a cat named Minne. You like reading, writing, photography, and rollerblading… pretty much sums you up."
She squeezed her eyes shut for a second and flinched away from him. "I don't know you!" He was close, he was so close…
"Yes. You do. Why else do you think I know so much about you?" August slid a little further away from her, seeing as she was uncomfortable. But after a while where he though she was dead it was hard not to get close.
She looked at him. Her eyes were teared up, and, for the first time, he could really notice how grey they were.
"Your eyes…" August was shocked. "T-they shouldn't be that color! There's something wrong!"
"What about my eyes?" she snarled through the tears. It was quite the combination.
"Why are you crying?", he asked gently as he put his hand on her shoulder.
"What about my eyes?!" she demanded.
"They're a different color! Very different color! An unnatural grey!", August burst.
"I was born with grey eyes!" she objected.
"No you weren't! I'd know! And it's a very unnatural color!", he argued. Someone in a white coat entered and waved them over.
Kate tensed. "White…" she whispered.
"It's okay. I don't know what's wrong, but it might have something to do with this." He got up and led Kate to the woman.
Kate resisted quickly. "No!" she yelled. "No!"
The woman in the white coat looks confused and concerned. "It's okay Kate." He spoke softly. August continued to lead her.
"No!" she yelled again and tried to pry herself away from his grip.
"What's wrong with her?", the woman asked carefully. August could tell she was a quiet person. "She's nice. A good person. Not the bad guy." He said it as if he was talking to a little kid.
"Nothing's wrong with me!" Kate snapped. She tried to run.
