Halm finished up with his batch of souls, turning to one of the blooming flowers. He carefully cupped it in his hand, tilting it to reveal the soul in the very center of the flower.
"See? The petals protect them."
Halm finished up with his batch of souls, turning to one of the blooming flowers. He carefully cupped it in his hand, tilting it to reveal the soul in the very center of the flower.
"See? The petals protect them."
Cas nodded a bit. "I don't wanna hurt them… souls are important, I assume."
"Yes, they are," Halm said gently. "Every living mortal being has one. Including you." Halm pulled one out of his bag of ones to plant, showing it to Cas.
Cas nodded again, looking down at himself as though expecting to see his soul. "Am I gonna die here?" He asked softly.
Halm hadn't been expecting that question.
"Well… Yes. Eventually, preferably far into the future."
Cas sighed. "And then… my soul gets reincarnated here over and over for all eternity or something?"
"Yes," Halm said softly. "You'll be here for the rest of time. It'll be your choice as to how you'll go about your eternity, however." He looked over at Cas, trying to be gentle with the information.
Cas fidgeted a bit, hesitating for a few seconds. "How do you mean?" He asked softly.
"Well, there are several ways it could happen. You could just do through the cycle like others, losing your memories and starting a new life. Or you could continue to the next vessel with all of your memories in tact. You could just get a new copy of the body you have now, or just stay as a soul without a body." Halm explained each option slowly, trying his best to be nice about this.
"Do I always belong to you or is that kinda… um… 'refreshed' when I… when I die?" Cas asked, his voice still quiet and weak.
"Um… You'll always be mine," Halm admitted softly after a moment of silent hesitation.
"I'm sorry."
Cas nodded tentatively and continued fidgeting. "So I… I'll never be able to go back to earth? I'm just gonna live here forever and ever?"
"You'll love here with me," Halm confirmed. "You'll only be able to visit earth occasionally."
"…Okay…" Cas bit his lip a bit and kept fidgeting, trying to process what was going on. "Am… am I gonna grow old and die or do I just… stop aging?"
"You'll get old and die." Halm lightly put his hand on Cas's shoulder.
"What… what if I don't wanna be old? I… um… never exactly expected to live that long…" He said weakly.
"Then… We'll have to figure out something." Halm grew quiet, looking Cas in the eye.
"There's still more I should tell you, about what all of this means, but are you sure you want to deal with this information right now? It can be a lot and I don't want you to get overwhelmed."
Cas shrugged. "I-I mean, I'd like to know, b-but I… um…" His voice broke and he got a bit choked up. "I'm not quite sure h… how to feel about all this…"
"Okay then," Halm said softly. He carefully made his way over to Cas, holding his arms open a little.
"It's okay," he said softly.
Cas hesitated for a second, looking up at Halm. His eyes were shining with tears. Eventually, he buried himself in Halm's arms, trembling as he tried to hold back his tears.
Halm wrapped his arms around Cas, holding him close. He carefully read his fingers through Cas's hair.
"Everything is going to be okay," he said softly, "You're going to be safe."
Cas drew in a wavering breath and gripped the fabric of Halm's shirt tightly. "But… f-forever is a really fucking long time…" He whispered.
"I know," Halm said softly. "I know." Halm held Cas close, knowing how overwhelming this had to be for Cas.
"We're going to have to make the best of this."
Cas clung tightly to Halm, a couple tears rolling down his pale cheeks. "I-I just… I c… I c-can't… do this…"
Halm pulled Cas up onto his lap, holding him as tightly as he dared.
"It'll be okay, Cas. You'll be okay in the end." If Cas really couldn't to deal with, he would be able to start over.
