"Soon," Matthew said. "We've got just a bit to go, I promise. It shouldn't be more than ten minutes."
"Soon," Matthew said. "We've got just a bit to go, I promise. It shouldn't be more than ten minutes."
"Alright… how are you doing?" He asked softly. "You've been walking all day."
"Well, it's more walking that I normally do," Matthew admitted, "But I'm doing good!"
Rowan sighed and closed his eyes. "You gotta take breaks too. Hopefully we'll be back to the town soon…"
"I'll be sure to," Matthew said. Rowan was right, after all. The avian hummed some, looking up.
"We can stop here," he announced.
Rowan nodded, carefully climbing out of Matthew's arms so he could help build a fire. He wanted to do his best to be useful.
Matthew kept a close eye on Rowan, especially since he had been limping before. The three chicks were allowed out of their nest finally, Tammy making her way over to try to climb up Rowan's leg while he worked on the fire with Matthew.
"Hi, baby… keep away from the fire. It could hurt you." Rowan gently pet Tammy's head, picking her up and kneeling down beside her. He felt better when he was sitting anyway.
Tammy nodded, smiling up at Rowan. He did her best to hug him, grinning up at him.
"Da…" She made a sound that was different than she normally did- it was just a chirp or trill, and seemed to be in English.
Rowan looked down at her curiously at the sound, still gently petting her with his thumb. "'Da'? What are you trying to say?" He asked softly.
Tammy screwed her face up in concentration.
"Da… Da…" She huffed some, looking up. "Da..ddy!" She blinked some, then grinned up at Rowan.
"Daddy!"
Rowan flushed a bit, his eyes widening. It took him several seconds to process before he grinned and hugged her. "Awwww~!"
Tammy was still grinning, hugging Rowan back as best she could. Matthew looked over, raising an eyebrow.
"What happened?" He asked, curious.
"She called me daddy!" Rowan replied, still grinning brightly. "That's her first word, right?"
Matthew blinked some, then grinned himself.
"Yeup, it is!" He moved over, smiling down at the small chick in Rowan's hold.
"Daddy, Daddy!" Tammy liked how Rowan responded to her calling him that, nuzzling her head against his chest.
Rowan grinned brighter and held her closer, still petting her. "Mhmm! That's right!" He smiled up at Matthew, his cheeks still pink with happiness.
Tammy leaned into the petting, humming some with content. Matthew put his arm around Rowan, hugging him close and kissing his head.
"Timmy and Tommy shouldn't be too far behind her then. I wonder what their words will be…"
"Mm… me too. They're all pretty sweet, so I'm sure it'll be something nice." Rowan returned the kiss and leaned into Matthew, humming happily.
"I'm sure too." Matthew smiled, looking down at the two boys. They were sitting together well within reach, watching the fire.
Rowan watched them closely, making sure that they wouldn't touch the fire. "Should we have some dinner?"
"Yes, that sounds like a good idea to me." Matthew reached into his pack, pulling out their food. He broke off small bits for the chicks, offering some to Timmy and Tommy before some to Tammy. The two boys took their food, eating quietly. Tammy hummed some, fidgeting as she watched her brothers get fed before accepting her small bit of bread.
Rowan kept Tammy close to himself and yawned, watching Matthew curiously. "How much longer do you think we'll be traveling?"
"Just a few more days should do it!" Matthew announced confidently. Tammy munched away happily at her food, relaxed against Rowan. Matthew offered food to Rowan and his mother before the avian settled down to eat himself."
"Sounds good to me." Rowan accepted the food and started eating quietly, resting his head against Samul's side.
Matthew smiled as Rowan leaned against him, humming some. Timmy stood and yawned, looking up at the two. He made grabby hands to be picked up, Tommy coming with him.
