She and I stayed perfectly still as the shock wave knocked Jer right off his feet, the debris flinging around with intent to smack into anyone stupid enough to not pay attention.
Eli gently tugged on my wrist again, bringing my open mouthed face back to her. From the grin that was still persisting on her features, I knew I looked as dumb as I felt. But she wasn't mocking me, no, her expression was warm and welcoming.

Distantly, I heard Jonas, talking at Jamie a mile a minute. “Are you all right? Where does it hurt? Where’s the person that hit you? Do you have any cuts? How do you feel? Do you feel okay?” and ending with a “Don’t scare me like that again!” His voice dripped with worry and concern and it seemed like he was trying to keep from crying.
“Don’t worry, don’t worry,” Jamie was saying. “Look at me, I’m fine—I’m just fine. I’m—It’s okay.” They sounded oddly detached.

(I haven't written it yet, but I was in a mood and captured a few snatches of the dialogue. It's when my girl Sam is caught at her house by her mom. Sam didn't exactly run away, but it wasn't on good terms on anyone. It's one of those times when stuff that's been held in for years all blows over. So Sam and her mom talk about their relationship and why Sam just disappeared. It doesn't go well.)
