"I'm not around enough to really do anything, though."
"I'm not around enough to really do anything, though."
She sighed and shifted. "I'm not even going to bother suggesting you stay here. Even if I offered you a job."
He sat there for a moment, frowning. She had put the responsibility of taking care of Tess upon him, and he felt obliged to at least ask. "What is this job?"
She blinked, surprised that worked. "Travel. Keep communications going between my allies. Settle… disputes… or problems within their territories that I don't have the time to deal with. You're a neutral party–an unknown. Son of the enemy but friend of mine. They'd be curious. You wouldn't stay in one place for long," she added.
He scratched his face. "You're guilt-tripping me. And it's working."
She shrugged. "I'm a good dictator." She tilted her head. "Well? Need any more details?"
He shrugged. "Seems simple enough."
She raised her brows. "You really don't want to know who you're going to be visiting?"
"Okay, who?"
"Let's see." She counted each ally off with her fingers. "Arachne, Queen of the Archashian demons–spiders–Rilvar, King of the Shadow demons, Drazath, King of the Criystalyn demons–snow and ice–uh, Hellhounds, Nightwalkers, Isic empire, the Isic gods, werewolves, elves, the Nazekian gods, Tess's mafia connections I'm assuming and her family… I think that's it." She thought for a bit. "Yeah, I think that's it. Might be more. I honestly lost track."
He shrugged. "So I'm police?"
She shook her head. "No. More like an ambassador, of a sorts. My allies are getting restless–especially the Hellhounds, Nightwalkers, and demons–and I'm afraid they'll forget the promises we've both made with my absence. I want to make sure they stay." She shrugged. "Plus, it's a way to get your name out there–in a good way. Become favored by a bunch of different peoples, and you won't be looked at suspiciously. They'll trust you."
He rubbed his nose. "And I'm ambassador material?"
She leveled a look at him. "I'm a nineteen year old princess of the universe and the gods that couldn't give two shits how to be 'proper.' Do you think anybody cares if you are ambassador material or not?"
He shrugged again. "Fair enough. Have anything for me right now, or can I go back to what I was doing?"
She finally fully smiled. "You can get back to ogling Tessa. Adieu." She bowed and disappeared.
He blushed slightly, staring out at the city for a moment. The first place I'm actually settling down in.
Tess groaned and flipped to her other side, positioning her wings unconsciously so she didn't twist them. Thanks to Runner, she was able to get in a good nap and not be disturbed by her restless magic.
He turned back at her and smiled. Maybe it won't be as bad as I thought.
Though he couldn't see thanks to her wing draped over her face, she stared back at Runner, resisting the urge to smile as well. Thank you Cin. I owe you big time. Hidden behind her wing, she let herself notice little details she hadn't seen before: the bump over his left eye, the tiny dimple when he smiled, just how adorable he was when he wasn't trying to be a badass. Her line of thought made her heart skip a beat.
He suddenly looked down at his left forearm, the one with the dragon tattoo. The ink itself seemed to swirl and twist, making the dragon flow around on his arm as if it were the real thing. He smiled slightly. "Yeah, I think I am." he seemingly said to nothing, then waited for a response. "Well, duh, she's a dragon, too. 'Course you like her."
Tessa watched in fascination, steadying her breathing to pretend she was still sleeping.
He looked back up at Tess for a moment, then back down to the tattoo. "No she isn't. She's dead asleep." He frowned.
Tessa didn't hear, lost in her own thoughts. I should show him the other side of me. Of course, I'd be with Cin so I don't look too desperate. Hey, don't I have something today…?
She bolted upright. "Shit! I forgot that was today!"
He quickly put his arm down, tilting his head. "Hm?"
