"It's cause I am."
"It's cause I am."
She went back to scurrying around her workshop. "Does this have anything to do with your father and Tessa?"
"Dad comes around and Imma rip his neck off. But it's Tess. Cin put all of the pressure on me to help her, and I have no clue how."
Junia shook her head. "Thia doesn't even know how. Is there anything you did with Tess to make her think you would be better for her?"
"She randomly burst into tears in a restaurant today, but other than that, I don't know."
She startled when she heard that. "She…cried?"
He nodded. "It was awkward."
"She's…. never done that in front of somebody. Well, except Andy, but she's mute, so she can't exactly tell about it."
He shrugged, not really knowing what else to say.
Junia flicked her fingers around, manipulating balls of metal to become earpieces and adding spells to help with suppressing the side effects of Runner's abilities. "Don't fret too much. Tess will help herself if she wants to."
He rubbed her face. "I guess."
Junia held up her finished product, scrutinizing it. Satisfied, she handed them to Runner. "Try these."
He slipped them into his ears, sighing through his nose in relief. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." She beamed, glad they worked and that Runner was satisfied. She picked up a spare lump of ore and twirled it between her fingers. "Y'know, while we're here… you might want to get something for Tess as an apology for leaving…" she smiled and shot a sly look his way.
"Daw, shit. Forgot about that. What should I get?"
She continued to twirl the ore. "Hmm. A ring? A necklace? Some pretty earrings?"
"Is she into that type of stuff?"
Junia gave him an 'are you serious' look. "She's a thief. Have you seen her stash? She steals from my shop every chance she gets."
"Oh, yeah. But I have no money."
"I'll send the bill to Thia." She tossed the ore in the air, then caught it again. "So, what will it be? You're customizing it."
"I am not the person you want doing that. Just…do what you think she'd like."
"Nope. You're customizing." She grinned. "More personal."
"I don't even know where to start." His frustration was beginning to build.
She sighed. "You're ruining my fun." She sat down and started sketching. She beckoned for Runner. "Come here."
He walked over, clasping his hands behind his back to hide the swirling dragon.
