(later) two scars over his right cheek, meeting around his missing eye. There is another large scar over his left arm and part of his torso
He is something of a pushover: very passive and quick to bend to the demands of his superiors, even if it means making unnecessary sacrifices or disappointing those close to him. Even his most aggro moment (taking Yan-Esolto in protest to marrying Yariel) was not an outright challenge to the arrangement, though he had already privately vowed to marry Vamah- just a petty slap to his father's pride.
Like Yalka, he has presumed albinism, tho bc it is tied to The Threads and his spot as a Select of the Corpus of Reigasta, there are a few details not associated purely with melanin deficiency. He still gets sunburnt very easily and is eye-sensitive to light, but unlike most others, he is immune to the allergic effects of pure Threads. However, he reacts poorly to processed Threads making contact with his skin. This makes his stint as an acolyte of the Sun particularly arduous (and therefore, holier).
He loses one eye during The Walking of the Flags, the organ being replaced with a Threaden prosthetic for aesthetic reasons, which binds itself to his flesh and activates his magical conditions
- When he gets his Threaden eye, Estus gains the ability to see through that eye (when uncovered and open) into a machine set into a room on Reigasta, but this does not relieve him of the effects of one-eyedness in the remaining original; he has no depth perception, and if he uncovers the threaden eye, he risks significant disorientation as he sees two locations superimposed over each other.
Estus was raised to the age of ten in Tuvalla and sent to Cas-Kiria as a ward thereafter. He spent his adolescence with Vamah and Oriel, the Mayadón’s twin children, and over time growing exceptionally close with Vamah. The two had become something like lovers by the time he was grown enough to return home. However, upon growing into adulthood, his father (Mayadón of Tuvalla) arranged for him to marry Vamah’s mother, replacing Aurus Kiria-Na, who had been missing long enough to be presumed dead. Stricken, Estus swore himself to the sect of Yan-Esolto to spite his father, moving back to Cas-Kiria, though now faced with a betrayed and icy Vamah and a much more tenuous relationship with the household as a whole.
The symbolism of Estus as the "eye":
- Considering Medival notions of the eye, he acts as a conduit for emotions throughout the plot (at first, stemming a lot of contention with Vamah, and then riling up the rest of the Corpus over Engrid); Literally, as the eye, his daughter is the heart bc of the medieval connotations
- Considering less-Medieval notions of sight and eyes, he is generally quiet and observant, even before the setting of the story; diegetically, he is a main 'eye' for the reader into a lot of the worldbuilding considered unknown to many other characters (i.e. the Sun Templars and the Corpus/ layout of the cosmos/ etc.)
