Nate followed Maddie's gaze to Esme. She didn't look strained or tired at all. He could feel his respect for her growing.
"Alrighty then. Which way are we headed?"
"We're heading northwest across Canada to Alaska in several small jumps," Esme said. "When we end this first jump, we'll be just outside a city. I'd like to stop there and find you guys some winter clothes, since we're headed up the side of a mountain eventually. I'd also like a bit of a breather before the next jump. Sound fair?"
"Yip. I like Canada. My…" he trailed off a moment. "My cousin is from Canada." He squared his shoulders. "Anything we can do to help with the jumps?"
She shrugged. "Mostly just don't step outside the circle or get too far away from me, I guess. I don't think any of you can control negativity, can you?"
"Maybe not negativity but I can do shadows…" Maddie said, shrugging a shoulder.
"Sorry, not quite the same. It's okay though, I'll manage." A minute later, the air next to them tore apart, letting in a wave of clean, bright light. "Here we are. Hop on out."
Maddie winced at the bright light but did as told and stepped through the hole, shielding her eyes from the light.
They were in an empty junkyard, on the outskirts of some unnamed city. The sun's position in the sky hadn't changed at all, and the weather was exactly the same as it had been back in Crash's territory. Luke took in their surroundings. "This is…charming."
Esme went and started poking around in a pile of scrap metal. "Yeah, like a free buffet." She gathered up handfuls of nails and rusty screws, shoving them in her pockets. "Don't mind me, I gotta stock up on snacks when I can."
(brb, gotta restart my computer, might take a bit)
Maddie nodded, "Yeah… go right ahead." She sighed and crossed her arms, kicking a piece of metal on the ground lightly.
(alrighty)
Nate raised an eyebrow but said nothing. He went to a pile of car tires and sat in them. "You know, I've never met a spirit of negative energy."
(wuff that was ruff)
"Oh yeah?" Esme glanced at him briefly. "…Any questions?"
He looked at her as she circled around the junkyard, grabbing whatever she could. "How does it work?"
"What, negativity? Well I'm no scientist, but I do know a guy who studies the stuff. He thinks it's like an airborne chemical that behaves like a sound wave, and it's as fundamental as the proton and neutron. Basically, negativity is a mixture of raw negative emotions–anger, fear, sadness, jealousy, you name it. When it's strongly concentrated in a human brain, it can cause mental illness. It doesn't affect my kind at all. In fact, we're made of it, and that's why we can control it. The science guy I know says negativity is actually an important nutrient that humans need….but only in small doses. Oh, and the opposite kind of energy is positivity. You can probably guess what that stuff's made of. It's really bad for us, like radiation, but humans can tolerate a much higher exposure." Esme found a shattered mirror and carefully put the shards into an old tupperware for later. "Any more questions?"
"Yeah," Nathan admitted, refusing to admire a girl who'd tricked them into debt. "Does that mean you can create those negative emotions in a person? And, are junkyard snacks really hygienic? Or do you also thrive on disease?"
"Make people feel bad? Oh, heck yeah, I can. I'm not like the others, though. I don't do it for fun. Some people just deserve it." She tossed a rusty can in the air and caught it again. "And I don't eat disease, exactly. Any organic matter is poisonous to me. I eat the stuff that nothing else can, like toxins, plastics, metals….the worst byproducts of humanity. That's why I tend to hang around cities, because there's a lot more stuff for me to eat there. Pollution? Littering? Those are my favorite things."
Nathan fell back against the tyres. "Well then." He pushed off the tyres, jumped and landed at Esme's side. "Tell us when you're stocked up. It's probably best we keep moving."
Luke had been busy looking around in some of the heaps of garbage nearby. Finding nothing of interest, he turned back to the group. "So, clothes next, right? I feel like it's getting chillier out already. Some snow boots and a good coat would feel pretty good right now."
"Oh right," Esme said, straightening. "This is the fun part. Since I doubt any of us have enough money for this shopping trip, I'm gonna teleport us into a store, we're all going to collect clothes as fast as possible, and then teleport back here. All right?"
A careful grin appeared on Nathan's face, but he quickly dismissed it. "Sounds like a plan." He beckoned to Maddie and Luke and steeled himself for the trip.
The trip went much faster this time, and almost immediately Esme set them down in the clothing section of a large store. Luckily, no one was around to see them appear out of thin air.
"Okay," Esme said quietly. "Meet back here in twenty minutes, max. Try not to draw attention to yourselves."
Nathan nodded and detached from the group, slinking off to get himself clothes. He went straight for the sweaters, then shoes, then coats and so on.
(should we wait for Carrots here?)
(Yeah, probably, Seeya later, then)
Luke breezed through the coats and jackets, plucking a pair of boots off the shelf with barely a second glance. He'd had to do this kind of thing before, although never with such an easy escape plan.
(Hey, so my school starts up again today so I won't be on much, sorry)
Maddie drifted through the aisles of clothes, picking up a grey sweater and black coat. It felt weird, just taking anything but she wasn't complaining.
