“I’m over here!” She called from th either side of the room, her view somewhat blocked but not entirely, “The window didn’t ended up working.”
"Okay, everybody make a circle pronto. I'm opening a portal before it catches up to us." Esme brought her hands together and then snapped them apart, splitting the air in two with a harsh zipping noise.
Nathan stared at the portal that had just appeared in the wake of Esme's hands. "Careful, Esme. if this thing's already weakening you…"
Esme grit her teeth. "I'll be fine. Hop in, quick."
Nathan obeyed quickly, and jumped into the portal. He fell through much quicker than the last times, and landed hard on his back.
Maddie quickly made her way over and followed Nathan, jumping through a few moments later. She landed with an 'oof' next to him but landed on her butt.
(sorry I'm late)
Luke nipped in after them, followed by Esme, who closed the portal just as the glowing figure leaped toward them. She drew a glowing red symbol in the air with her finger to lock the portal shut and sank to her knees, panting.
Luke touched his fingers to the cut on his face and examined the smear of blood critically, then shrugged and cleaned off his hand on the edge of his shirt. "Wow. That was exciting. Everybody okay?"
Maddie nodded, “I’m fine, I think… just a little sore from the fall but nothing major.”
Nathan sat up and crawled over to Esme. He reached put to put a hand on her shoulder, but pulled back. She didn't seem like the type. He leaned back on his hands instead.
"You alright?"
She stared at the darkness for a minute, then nodded, stiffly retying her hair in a short ponytail. "Yeah. I've been worse. You?"
Nathan stayed silent a moment, and looked away. "Well enough."
"So," Luke said, sitting down as well. "What was that thing?"
Esme shook out her hair, which caused most of it to slip out of the ponytail, and turned to face them. "Well, you know how I said earlier that positivity is the opposite of negativity? That was a spirit of positivity. They're called Lucem. They live on the mountain we're heading for. I didn't expect to run into one so far from our destination, but he must have been border patrol or something. As you may have guessed, they're not welcoming to strangers. Especially shadow spirits like me."
Nathan closed his eyes. "Well, this has officially started then. First obstacle, check." He opened his eyes againa and looked at Esme. "First of many, I suppose."
"Yep." Esme got to her feet. "We'll manage. They're not invincible."
"Yeah, I was about to ask," Luke said. "What's their weakness? Can humans like me stand a chance against them?"
Esme half-sighed, half-snorted. "You stand a better chance than I do. Any normal weapon will work against them as long as you catch them by surprise. Besides, Lucem will never kill humans, only injure them. They might seem cold based on how they act in combat, but they're actually as emotionally weak as children. Gullible, too. It comes from leading a sheltered life under the wing of an over-protective creator. The same creator we'll have to be outsmarting in order to get my friend back, by the way."
Nathan's heart sank. "OK. So he's an evil mastermind. Good to know."
(sorry I'm late again)
"She, actually. She's their mom. Kinda. I don't know how it works, to be honest. I'm pretty sure there's no dad." Esme shrugged. "Think less 'mastermind' and more 'helicopter parent'. She believes that evil beings don't belong in this world and should be destroyed no matter what. Speaking as one of those so-called 'evil' beings, it sorta sucks."
“I can only imagine. That’s terrible, have they never heard of balance? You need negativity to balance out the positivity, right?” Maddie frowned a little.
"Of course. It's the nature of things. The creator of the Lucem–we spirits call her Hashar–she just hates anyone who endangers her precious children. Legend has it that she did once accept a shadow spirit as her adopted son, but only after he died saving the life of one of her young Lucem. What good is forgiveness for crimes you didn't commit, especially when you're dead?" Esme snorted bitterly. "Others might tell you a different story, but I hate her and I think she's a psycho. Now way am I letting her keep Celina locked up like this."
"So….Celina's human, then, or what?" Luke asked. "Is she another shadow spirit like you?"
Esme paused and looked down at her hands. "Actually…that's the thing. Celina is one of them. A Lucem."
“Then… then why is she locked up? If she’s one of them then why keep her locked if this… Hashar loves her children then why is Celina different? Or is it because she knows you?” Maddie crossed her arms and bit her lip in thought.
Nathan stayed quiet during the conversation, observing Esme's reaction to being interrogated. Maddie mentioning Celina affected her, that was for sure. He would recognize those symptoms anywhere. He got up, and as he passed Esme he whispered in her ear. "She knows you quite well, doesn't she?"
Esme didn't meet their gaze, looking tired. "She's….not like the others. She still sees good in everyone, even people that most would consider pure scum. She has this nasty habit of giving people a chance before she judges them." She slowly rubbed her hands together, which seemed to be a nervous habit. "A couple years ago I helped her out of a bad spot. I thought I made it pretty clear that I was no hero–I was just dealing out the devil's justice on her attackers. But she didn't see it that way. Nobody's been that kind to me in a long time." She sighed. "Anyway, long story short, her mom found out we were seeing each other and kicked me to kingdom come. I haven't heard from Celina since, but I know she's not happy. She could never stand to be locked up."
Maddie sighed, “That’s… awful to lock Celina up like that. And to kick you out… this women doesn’t seem like a very nice person at all.”
Luke folded his arms. "I agree. We have to get your gal pal outta her mom's birdcage pronto. Right guys?"
Maddie nodded, “Right. From what you’ve said she seems to nice of a person to leave there. Not that we wouldn’t leave her if she wasn’t but you know what I mean.”
Esme smiled slightly. "Thank-you." Standing up, she brushed off her hands and took a deep breath. "Okay, everybody huddle in, I'm gonna get us back on our way."
