Esme pulled a stick of charcoal from her pocket and scratched out a wide black circle in the grass around them. "You might feel a little dizzy and achy after we travel for a while, but I'll be shielding you from the worst of it. You'll get used to it pretty quick, I'll bet."
"Yeah… hopefully." Maddie mumbled, crossing her arms over her chest.
Esme reached out and pulled the air apart with one smooth motion, revealing the roiling darkness beyond. "Okay, nobody move."
"Okay, I get darkness is sorta my thing but that doesn't look fun." Maddie frowned at it.
Esme gave a half-smile. "Just don't look too close at the shadows and you'll be fine. They have a tendency to try and upset you if they can."
(I feel like we should probs wait for Amber at this point)
Nathan inhaled the sharp scent of darkness and let it numb his fear. He nervously flicked the hair out his face and looked over reassuringly at Maddie. "Geronimo?"
Maddie nodded slowly, "Yeah, Geronimo. Allons-y."
(ooft, you just missed Dusty by like ten minutes or so)
Nathan straightened his blue bow-tie and took a careful step forward.
(Carrots I have a poem I think you'll like)
(Oh, really? Can I hear it, please?)
(How many tears does the Doctor cry?
Enough to fill a River.
Enough to fill a Pond.
At least enough to water a Rose)
(… the tears, too many memories… cries)

The darkness swallowed them, cutting off all light and sound at first. It felt like they were surrounded by layers and layers of gauzy cloth that shifted in some kind of ethereal breeze into different shapes and patterns. For a moment they seemed to be in a large room, then in a filthy tunnel, then in a hall of mirrors that reflected their group into infinity. All sounds were dulled to faint whispers with a subtle underlying hum that hurt their ears a little. The ground beneath their feet felt solid, but they could still see odd flickers of movement below them like giant fish gliding by, and nothing appeared to be sheltering them from whatever danger lurked in the folds of shadow all around them. The air felt like dry, warm dust in their lungs.
Though a soldier to the core, Nathan was uneasy. "This is simply fantastic."
He let his gaze wander, not wanting to aggravate the shadows. They rippled around him, swooping past his eyes and running up and down his body. Whatever made these shadows come to life, he did not want anything to do with it.
"What now, then? Do we know where we are?"
"Don't look at me for an answer to that question…" Maddie rubbed at the base of her ears, as if it could give some kind of relief for the pain growing. She slowly and carefully, turned her body on the spot to give herself a better picture of the area surrounding them all.
(yeeps I'm late, sorry guys)
"This is the Between," Esme said. (Is that already a name for something in a story somewhere? It sounds familiar…) "It's a special dimension used by my kind to travel between seconds. It's also the dimension of negative energy, so it's definitely not safe for humans. Believe it or not, I have a shield up that's protecting you from tons of bad stuff right now. I can't keep it up for long, but don't worry. We're almost to the first resting point."
(ahhaa I missed you)
"The Between…" Nathan repeated blankly. "That sounds familiar… How long can you usually keep your shield up?"
She was protecting the humans of the group. If he had to, he could exit the bubble; he'd probably last a bit longer than a human out in the 'Between'.
(ahrgh you're already gone aren't you XP)
(It does sound familiar… I mean, the 'In Between' is a movie and tv show but…)
"Then let's get to the resting point then, this place is given me the creeps." Maddie shuddered a little before she looked to Esme.
"With a group this size, I can make the shield last about ten minutes. Everything looks quiet in here today, so I doubt we'll have to worry about being targeted by the other things that live here. We exit in about six minutes, either way, so that's plenty of extra time."
