Bucky blinked. "No, I meant my head. The uhm…the arm has nothing to do with it." He looked down at where Steve's hand lay over his metal one.
Bucky blinked. "No, I meant my head. The uhm…the arm has nothing to do with it." He looked down at where Steve's hand lay over his metal one.
"Hm," Steve sounded, biting his lip for a moment, "Well…with that, you're still making progress, right? You're remembering more stuff. And maybe you're warming up to the idea of therapy– which is just an option."
Bucky shrugged. "Yeah, maybe so. I just…I don't know." he replied, running a hand through his hair.
"Well…I'm sorry you that you feel…unworthy or something," Steve said, shaking his head softly, "I don't feel like I'm doing enough, cause I wanna do more– but other than talking about it with you, I don't really know how."
Bucky nodded a little bit. "It's just…I don't know. I don't…remember enough, and what I do remember…isn't good." His eyes flickered for a moment.
Steve chewed his lip as he took in what he said, looking down at his hand over Bucky's. He couldn't possibly imagine what it'd be like to carry that many painful memories and have so little other ones. "I wish I could take that away from you, I do. Is there anything I can do?"
Bucky closed his eyes for a moment, shrugging his shoulders. "I uhm…I don't know." he replied, letting out a breath. "I'm sorry."
"No– don't be sorry," Steve said, giving his metal hand a gentle squeeze and looking up at him, "We're gonna figure it out, and it's all gonna be okay. The happy memories will outweigh the bad ones."
Bucky looked at him. "Maybe eventually, but I just…I…I'm sorry." he said, taking a deep breath.
"Bucky," Steve said with tenderness in his voice, looking at him with a softened expression, "You have nothing to apologize for. Nothing at all. Things will get better, I can promise you that."
Bucky nodded a little. "Right. Alright." He replied, running his fingers through his hair and trying to distract himself.
Steve let out a breath, nodding slightly. We'll figure it out. We have to, He reminded himself, trying to ignore a hint of doubt within his optimism. "Whatever it is you decide to do– therapy or not, I'm gonna support you."
Bucky smiled faintly. "Thanks." He replied, looking over at Steve, his blue eyes careful but trusting.
Steve swallowed, smiling back. "Of course," He said with a nod and a faint laugh, "It's you n' me against the world, right?"
"To the end of the line." Bucky replied with another faint little smile. He remembered more about what those words meant, now.
Steve could even try to hide the smile that spread onto his face at Bucky's words. "Yeah," He said, nodding slowly, "Yeah, to…to the end of the line. We've got this."
Bucky smiled a little as he looked over at Steve. At his friend. Or whatever they were now.
Steve smiled at Bucky, though his gaze floated past him at the sight of the sun drifting closer to the horizon, the clouds just hinting at a note of pale purple. "Still up for the Ferris wheel?" He asked after a moment, smiling as he glanced at the illuminated circle in the distance with only a few people in line.
Bucky blinked. "Hmm? Oh. Yeah. If you can handle the height." he replied, getting up and throwing away his trash, and then coming back over. "Let's do it."
(mmm they should kiss at the top-)
Steve let out a laugh, nodding as he stood and threw away his trash. "I can handle it," He said shooting Bucky a shy smile, "With you there, I can."
(mhmmm)
Bucky smiled at him, nodding a little. "Let's go, then." he replied, gesturing to the ferris wheel and starting to walk towards it.
Steve nodded, looking around and smiling at the twinkling lights of the amusement park as they walked toward the ride. He could almost hear the muffled sounds of their younger selves laughing while swing music played as they got in line.
Bucky was quiet, looking around and wishing he remembered more of their previous visits to this place, because he knew so very little of them.
Steve paid the fare for the Ferris wheel, opening the little door and holding a hand out in front of him. "After you," He said to Bucky with a cheeky smile, earning a chuckle from the ride operator.
Bucky squinted at him for a moment, then climbed into the seat and gesturing to Steve. "Your turn." He replied.
