"Yeah." Mycah nodded, taking out a few more guards. But some of them started firing back, which was not ideal. Mycah held up their hand, palm towards the guards. A black shield sprung into existence between Mycah and the guards. The bullets bounced off, but the guards kept firing. "This isn't going to hold much longer," They warned, wishing they had practiced creating shields more often.
Winter nodded. "Right." he had made it to the exit, and ducked down it, running now. One hand slid around to hold onto Mycah's back, holding them steady. "Just gotta make it out and to the car." he grumbled to himself, running down a hallway. His shoes left red footprints behind.
Mycah dropped the shield and let out a breath. It has been seconds from breaking– if one more bullet has hit it, they would have probably died. They risked a look forward, then quickly turned back to where they came from. The hallway behind them was empty, aside from Winter's bloody footprints, but it wouldn't stay that way for long.
Winter held onto Mycah with one hand, leaving bloody fingerprints on their shirt. He wove through the hallways, ducking and weaving to avoid as many people as possible. Behind them, the shouts of guards could be heard.
Mycah kept their eyes on the hallway behind them, ready to take down the first guard that appeared. One ran around the corner and Mycah shot them. Another one foolishly entered the hallway and they went down as well. As long as they didn't start getting smart and shooting around corners, Mycah would be fine.
Winter finally made his way out the entry, headed for the car. "Does that car have armor?" he asked, glancing at Mycah for a moment, then returning his attention to the front.
"A little, yeah. It'll resist bullets and some magical attacks– not that anyone except me will be using those– but anything bigger will damage it quite a bit." Mycah explained, their neck hurting a bit from looking backward so much. But they were still being followed, and they weren't about to take a bullet in the back.
Winter nodded. "Alright." he replied. Once they made it to the car, he opened up the door and deposited Mycah in the driver's seat, darting around the vehicle to climb into the passenger seat. "Let's go!"
Mycah pulled the turned the car on and slammed the gas pedal down. "Tell me where to go to get out of here," Mycah said, starting back the way they came. They didn't know what Winter was planning, but they thought a good place to head for was one of the towns near the sea cliffs– they're the least on-board with all of this.
Winter shrugged. "I don't know. Just drive. We need to get out of the city, but after that…I don't know." he replied, cleaning his daggers off.
"Okay." Mycah nodded, continuing to follow the path they had taken there, minus the stop at the clothing shop. They tried not to speed, but the thought that there were people right behind them didn't make it easy. Thankfully, this city was full of cars exactly like the one Mycah and Winter were in, so they blended in. Soon, though, they could hear sirens echoing around the city. Who knew how long their stolen cover would last?
Winter was bouncing one foot, waiting. "Do you know where we can go to lay low?" he asked, looking over at Mycah and raising his eyebrows, putting the daggers away.
"Not a specific place, but there are some really small towns near the sea cliffs where we could go. The people there aren't really that invested in politics, so it would be the ideal place to go," Mycah said, turning a corner. The buildings were getting smaller– they were close to leaving the city. "What do you think?"
Winter nodded. "That works." He replied, glancing over at them for a moment, then away again, letting out a breath. "Are we going to part ways once we arrive, or what?"
"Good. I don't know. I wouldn't mind your company, but if you have somewhere to go, that's fine." Mycah pressed down on the gas pedal once they'd left the city, speeding through the dark night. The sirens had faded once they left the city, which relieved a great deal of stress.
"I don't have anywhere I need or want to go, no." he replied slowly. "So long as you're alright with a possessed murderer living with or near you." he flashed a small, tight smile.
"Eh, it would make life more interesting." Mycah shrugged, turning onto a different road. "I could use someone as weird and damaged as I am." They gave Winter a wry smile.
Winter laughed quietly. "Ah, yes. Interesting is one way to put it, I suppose." he responded, shaking his head just a little bit.
"Mmm." Mycah nodded, pressing down even more on the gas pedal. The landscape passed on a dark blur. Mycah tried to avoid passing through any towns, which would make it take even longer. But the extra security was worth it.
Winter was quiet as they drove, watching out the window and rearview for anyone following them. He didn't see anyone, but it was still best to keep an eye out.
It was just before dawn when the ocean came into view. Mycah guessed they still had about a half day of driving left before they reached the village Mycah had in mind. "How good of an idea would it be to take a small break?" They asked, trying to keep the weariness out of their voice.
Winter looked over, and nodded. "Hm? Okay." he replied with a slow stretch, shaking his head a little bit. He took a deep breath.
Mycah sighed in relief and pulled over in the next safe-ish place they could. They parked the car and leaned their head back for a few seconds. "I'm going to take a quick nap. If you need to, go ahead," they said, looking over at Winter.
Winter nodded. "Alright." he replied simply. He decided to at least try, even if he wasn't sure he'd get much. He closed his eyes, leaning back in his seat.
Mycah closed their eyes, hoping they would fall asleep quickly. And even though they'd had an exciting night, that wish was granted. Almost as soon as they closed their eyes, Mycah was fast asleep.
