Winter nodded slightly. "Yeah." he replied softly, finishing his drink and putting the empty glass away. Inside of him, the demon stretched and grumbled, and he pushed it down. Not now. Not here. He thought, closing his eyes for a moment.
Mycah searched the crowd, wondering who had just entered the party. Could it be her? Then they caught a glimpse of blonde hair and hard, brown eyes. Their heart jumped and they blinked, sure their eyes were playing a trick on them. It couldn't… but there, standing in the middle of the crowd, was the new leader of the country: Crin Marchesi.
Winter was quiet, watching the crowd's movements, watching Crin. Watching everyone, trying to keep track of everything that was happening.
"There she is," Mycah hissed, their eyes almost glowing with rage. Now, she just had to go somewhere where they could get a clear shot at her, and it would be over.
Winter put a hand on Mycah's shoulder. "Don't rush into anything, Mycah." he warned in a soft voice. "If you rush, you might not be able to win this."
"I know." Mycah took a deep breath, their eyes still fixed on Crin. Why wasn't she moving? "Go make a speech about how amazing you are!" They said under their breath, glaring at her.
Winter cleared his throat. "Mycah." he said softly. "You're going to draw attention to yourself. Look at me." he needed to distract them before someone noticed their conspicuously out of place behavior.
Mycah barely heard Winter, their head full of every horrible thing she'd ever made them endure. Thanks to her… they'd never had a normal life, lost their family twice… their whole country had been torn apart by her mad grab for power. The small part of Mycah not seething with rage made their head turn and their head tilt up to meet Winter's eyes. But they weren't seeing him, not really.
Winter gently grabbed Mycah's shoulders. "Focus on me." he said calmly. "Please focus on me. Don't think about her, or what's happened. Just focus on me and my face."
The physical contact partially snapped Mycah back to the present, though memories were still flitting around their mind. "I…" They trailed off, their head starting to turn back towards Crin despite what Winter had said. She looked so normal… If anyone had passed her in the street, they wouldn't suspect her of being evil. That almost made it worse.
Winter gently grabbed Mycah's chin and guided it so that they were looking at him again. "You need to calm down. You're all over the place, and you'll make a mistake and fail if you continue on like this." he said, keeping his voice low and quiet.
Winter was right, Mycah realized. They were acting so rash… it was unlike them to behave like this. To think that the mere sight of Crin would set them off would never have occurred to them. "Sorry. I don't know what…" Mycah trailed off, their heart still beating quite fast. There was something wrong with them, that was for sure. Why else would they be doing this?
Winter looked at them carefully. "It's alright. Just calm down. Deep breaths. You will get justice, but you won't get it if you rush in like a madman." he said calmly.
"Right. You're right." Mycah kept staring at Winter, trying to focus on nothing but him. Slowly but surely, their heartbeat slowed and their breaths evened out. They kept staring at him, trying to shut out all those emotions that ad burst into being. They wouldn't do Mycah any good with this mission.
He looked back at Mycah steadily, waiting as the other calmed down. "There you go." he said softly. "There. Deep breaths."
Finally feeling somewhat stable, Mycah dropped their gaze. With luck, the box they'd stuffed all their emotions into wouldn't open until they were ready. Having another one of those moments of pure rage wouldn't be good for either them or Winter.
Winter let go when Mycah seemed calmer, looking down at them. "Better?" he asked, raising his pale eyebrows slightly. He hoped Mycah was better.
"Yeah." Mycah nodded and brushed some hair back into their face. "Let's hope something happens soon. I'm not a fan of parties." They glanced around the room, which had gone back to a comfortable chatter.
Winter nodded. "Good." he replied softly. "And yes, something happening soon would be great." he chuckled, shaking his head just a little bit.
"Don't like parties either?" Mycah asked, looking around. They probably both needed to move away from the bar– lingering too long in one place would probably draw attention to them. "Shall we take a walk around the area?"
"Ha. No, I don't." he replied. "And…yes, that would be good." he nodded his head. He wanted to take note of the guards, the doors. Everything. Try and form an escape route, since Mycah hadn't.
Mycah turned and started walking towards the edge of the room. It was less crowded there, and Mycah felt better with a wall on one side of them. They were just wandering, really, with no goal in mind.
Winter walked with Mycah, his blue eyes watching everything carefully, taking note of the people, guards, exits.
Every once in a while, Mycah caught a glimpse of Crin through the crowd of people, causing a bolt of anger to shoot through them. Every time, they clenched their hands into a tighter fist and looked away quickly, but their eyes always wandered back to her. She still wasn't moving, just standing around talking to people and showering them her with fake smiles–
Winter reached out and gently placed a hand on Mycah's shoulder. "Calm down. We'll get her, I promise." he murmured quietly, leaning closer so Mycah could hear.
