Darren slumped against the couch. ”I don't know.” he sighed. ”All I know is he told me to call him ”E”. I didn’t see his face but he looked like he worked out a lot. He contacted me and told me that he would pay me if I shot a dangerous criminal. Though I don’t get why it wasn’t with a real bullet.”
Killian narrowed his eyes. "What do mean, wasn't with a real bullet? What did you use?" He asked, crossing his arms. His normally green eyes had turned dark.
Darren shrugged. ”It looked like one of those tranq darts Animal Control uses on wild animals but smaller and when I asked him what was in it, he told me not to worry about it. The guy probably grabbed after it was in her system.”
"Right. How did you contact him?" Killian asked, frowning and looking down at Darren. He was glad that the man was cooperating.
“I didn’t. He found me.” Darren sighed knowing he was about to dig himself into a bigger hole. ”Look, it's no secret that I hate people like you. I just got a call from a blocked number, the guy sounded like a friend of mine from the service asking to meet up. Next thing I know I'm talking to a guy who was agreeing with me about all of you. He kept the hood of his coat up so I couldn't see his face and offered me the money and a job.”
Killian was silent for a long moment. "And you know absolutely nothing about how to contact him? Could you describe him for me, or should I examine your memories myself?"
Darren shook his head. ”Not a clue how to find him. Even if I did why would I tell you? Are you going to ask him for help in finishing her?” he asked nastily before raising a brow and mocking. ”Or are you soft? Maybe you like her?”
While they were talking, Jade manipulated the bug to fly over to Darren’s phone which was on the table nearby and quickly cloned it into her computer.
Killian's arm darted forward, snatching Darren by the front of the shirt and shaking him. "it doesn't matter. Now answer my fucking questions, or I'm throwing you out your own window." He snarled, abd the windows all flew open at once, ready for him to make good on his threat.
Darren flinched as the windows slammed open but met Hex’s stare, with a small amount of fear. ”I already told you everything I know.”
”Hex. Let him go and come back.” Jade implored softly. ”I think he's telling the truth. There's nothing more he can tell us.”
Killian stared at Darren for a long moment, then dropped him back on the couch. "Fine." He turned and left, releasing the spell holding Darren still.
Jade maneuvered the bug back onto Hex’s shoulder as he left and Darren slumped backward on the couch, breathing heavily as he tried to calm down from the encounter.
Killian left. He climbed out of the building, and got onto the hoverboard again, headed back to the base.
”Killian? Are you ok?” Jade asked carefully, not meaning physically. Some of Darren’s answers had rattled her a bit… as did his questions.
"Yes, perfectly. Why?" He replied as he guided the hoverboard back, whipping through the streets.
”I just wanted to make sure. You seemed a little upset. I know that wasn't easy and you're really good at being intimating but…” Jade sighed. ”I wasn't sure if he was actually getting under your skin.”
Killian snorted. "He annoyed me. That's all." He replied with a slight shrug.
”Ok.” Jade nodded to herself before smiling at the camera. ”Thank you for all your help. I don't think I could have pulled of a convincing ”bad cop” act.”
Killian chuckled softly. "Alright." He replied with a shrug. "You're welcome." He kept going.
Jade smiled at him even though she knew he couldn't see her and started digging through the information she pulled from Darren’s phone.
He arrived back at her base, and landed the hoverboard. "Hey. I'm back." He said with a grin, putting the board away and walking over.
”Welcome back.” Jade paused her searching and turned to smile at him. ”You got a lot of good information out there.”
He nodded. "Of course I did. Why wouldn't I?" He grinned at her, sitting down and looking at her. "So. Anything useful about who called the hit?"
Jade bit her lip. ”I haven't traced the number yet but I wouldn't be surprised if it was from a burner.” she told him. ”And, like I suspected, the money came from an off-shore account so it won't be easy to track the origin. But…” she trailed off with a note of guilt in her voice.
"But what?" He asked, cocking an eyebrow. "What did you find?" He smiled lightly, taking his mask off.
Jade sighed. “Well… I found something about Darren that explains why he has such a strong opinion about heroes and others with powers.” she explained downcast before she pulled up a picture from his phone of Darren, a young woman, and another man who looked similar to Darren.
