"Well at least they probably don't want you dead," Ava remarked drily, not looking at either. She picked up her sandwich and started eating.
"Well at least they probably don't want you dead," Ava remarked drily, not looking at either. She picked up her sandwich and started eating.
"Oh I probably have a few people that want me dead. You two are not the first to ask for help, and are likely to not be the last," Kye shrugged. "And while I would prefer to stay alive, my mind set has always kind of been, 'If I die, I die.' It won't be my problem anymore."
Ava looked up, surprised at Kye's answer. "Oh, well, I wasn't exactly asking you, but I do have a response to that - it's not likely that your family, your entire family wants you dead. In fact, they already tried to kill me."
Kye kind of nodded to her comment, he turned his back to the two as he began walking back to the kitchen. "Well, I wouldn't know. I didn't ever have any siblings, never met my father, and my mother met death when I was only six. So I have no clue if they would have tried to kill me or not. I wasn't technically suppose to even happen."
Kain plugged his ears the conversation getting to dark and grim for him so he curled up on the floor with his hands on his ears
(Haha Kye and Ava have already had this conversation before - it seems to come up a lot)
Ava noticed Kain curled into himself on the floor. "Hey, kid, you okay?"
Kain moved his left hand from his ear and managed to whimper out "Your con-conversation scared me"
Ava moved to Kain's side and gently put a hand on his shoulder. "Aw kid, I'm sorry. We've just been through some tough times. Sometimes it's just easier to talk it out, y'know?"
Kain nodded slowly but still never liked to talk about it
Ava shook her head in sadness. This kid needed a parent. Or at least a guardian. But she couldn't be that guardian. No, she wasn't capable of such a role. She sighed inwardly. "You'll get through this, kid. We all do, eventually." She could practically feel his pain emanating off his body. It wasn't easy to accept her fate, but that's what she did. And look at her now, she was numb to the deep-seated pain inside her.
Kye was washing the dishes that sat in the sink. Without making eye contact with either of them. Then he shut off the water, and stopped moving. He stayed where he was for a moment, with his head tipped to one side. "Kain, who did you say you were running from again?"
"Katie," she breathed out quietly, remembering the little child that she'd "adopted" while on the streets. She wondered what'd happened to her. Perhaps they finally found her. Perhaps she died. Perhaps, she found a replacement for herself. Perhaps… She'd never told her who she was running from. That was one of the reasons they bonded. They knew which questions to ask the other and which ones were forbidden. They knew how to live. They gave each other tips, and protected one another.
"Scientists that wanted to force me to do things for them like eat deadly concoctions or horrible things that should have killed me but that is why they did it and when i got the chance i ran for my life to get away" Kain wished someone would hug him but he felt like that wouldn't happen even if someone did hug him he wouldn't be used to it the scientists never gave him hugs
(i'm crying while typing this)
His words set off a chain of memories, her and Katie when they ran for their lives after they tried to rob a store. It wasn't her idea, though. It had been Katie's. Ah yes, her and her crazy ideas. And then there was the time when Katie had tried to make friends with the stray animals. She shook her head, clearing her head.
Kain not realizing what he was doing lightly hugged Ava
Kye began walking out of the kitchen drying his hands. He tossed the rag onto the counter and walked to his door. He opened it and stepped out into the hallway. After a few moments he walked back in and locked the door. "There's someone going door to door asking about something. They're looking for someone. I don't know who."
Ava was a bit startled at Kain's touch, but smiled lightly and put her own arms around him. Aw, he's so cute and tender, she thought. When she heard Kye's words, her whole body stiffened and she withdrew her arms slowly. Nonono I'm not ready to go yet. There's a reason I seek refuge every night… she thought frantically. But what if they're here for the kid? Oh god no, I already feel responsible for him!
Kain jumped at Kye's voice and hid behind the couch
"Ava take Kain to the closet and get into the trap door. Don't make a sound, don't move, don't come out until I tell you it's safe," Kye ordered coming back into the room and moving things. "Take Munyeca with you in case something happens. If I don't come to get you within a half hour, follow the small vent type space down to the ground floor and get out." He paused and tipped his head again as if he were listening to something. "Whoever it is has a gun, so all I may be able to do is stall them. Stay safe, and try to make it to the edge of town. I have a friend there who'd be willing to help you like I am. His name is Hosea."
Ava's eyes hardened. Her voice void of emotion, she replied, "Yes. Come along now, Kain," she walked to the closet, and opened the trap door and climbed in, waiting for Kain. This she was used to. Constantly hiding, running in a world where anyone could be a danger. That didn't mean she liked this life, but if her life the way it was were to suddenly change, she didn't know what she would do. This life she was comfortable with. She knew how to navigate it.
(I kinda want to join)
Kain followed her and grabbed her hand "I'm scared"
(@ZephirFox8812 you should be able to join no problem.)
(Of course you may join! Thanks for asking c:)
Her voice softened. "Ah kid, it'll be alright. This isn't an unfamiliar situation." Suddenly guilt flooded her mind. About, say, three times the kind strangers who'd offered her refuge for the night had died. And all because the other had been looking for someone else, but they'd thought it was her. Ava blinked her eyes, clearing her head. No, she couldn't let feelings get in the way of her decisions right now. She was the older one, she needed to stay level-headed.
