Ava gave a sigh of relief. "Who is it?" she asked, walking out, but she stopped short when she saw the little boy. "A kid? What's a kid doing on your doorstep?"
Ava gave a sigh of relief. "Who is it?" she asked, walking out, but she stopped short when she saw the little boy. "A kid? What's a kid doing on your doorstep?"
"I w-was told th-that i would be safe here by some people that really scared me but they were nice" Kain answered both questions at once
Ava's expression softened immediately. "Oh, hon, what are you running from?" she got down on her knees to be level with Kain. "Listen, I know what it's like. I've been running for eleven years," she lowered her voice.
Kye smiled and walked into the main room. "Just close the door when you come in. And don't let Munyeca out please, last time she got out she made her way to the roof, and I don't feel like following her up there again."
"I'm ru-runnimg fro-from a place that they for-forced me to take medicine and other tre-treatments" Kain said softly closing the door and sitting on the floor
Munyeca came around the corner and started rubbing on Kain's legs. She was purring and her fur was all fluffed up. Almost as if she was trying to look more pretty.
Kain let out an adorable laugh and asked "Will she let me hold her?"
"A lab," Ava breathed softly. "I'm sorry, kid."
Bending down to pet Munyeca, who appeared to have come out just for the company, she smiled. A real, genuine smile, the first one in a long, long, time.
"Yeah, she's should, if she's rubbing on you she'll probably let you hold her," Kye replied as he poked his head around the corner. "I got her from a shelter, the lady there said that she used to be a trauma therapy cat. As in, they used her to help people who have been through something traumatic. She tends top gravitate towards children, whenever I have them over." He walked from sight and a bag crinkling could be heard. He came back holding what looked like a treat of some kind. "Would you like to give her a treat? She'd probably love you for life."
Kain nodded as he picked up the cat "yes I would"
Kye handed the treat to Kain and turned to head back towards the small space that was the kitchen. "If you two want there's a couch over here, and a kind of garbage view through the window. I'm gonna make us some lunch and then we can figure out what you two need and where you two can go."
"okay thank you" Kain said softly
"Oh-okay," Ava replied with as much normalness as she could conjure up. "Hey, kid, uh…" she started, heading over to the couch to sit down. "You know, I'm here if you ever need me…" she finished. God, that sounds so lame. she reprimanded herself. And cheesy, she added a split second later.
Fixing the cat in his arms Kain set out to thank her but was distracted by the purring of the cat and mumbled "Thank you"
Ava gave a fake smile in return and settled herself on the couch. Suddenly, a question hit her and she had to ask it. "Hey, how old are you kid?"
Kye didn't look like he was paying attention to what the two were talking about as he made sandwiches. He would glance out the window every so often looking down at the street below. Munyeca continued purring and smuggling in Kain's lap.
Kain looked up to the girl on the couch from his place on the floor "I'm 10. why ask? I never got your names?"
"Ah, that's young, but then again, I was younger than you, but I also had no choice…" Ava trailed off in her explanation. She didn't like to talk about her childhood much. Hah. Childhood, as if she had one. As if she had a family who loved her enough to give her a proper one. "Anyways, enough about me, I'm Ava, and that," she pointed towards Kye. "…is Kye. He's not my father or anything, he's just… giving me a place to hide for the time being."
"Oh. guess we're in the same boat" Kain said sadly
"I do tend to be the go to person for those who need somewhere to hide," Kye laughed as he brought both of them a sandwich. "Somehow the people of this city found me to be a really safe person to hide with. I have not figured out why, but I'm willing to help how I can."
"that's nice Kye" Kain smiled and took a bite from his sandwich
"Yeah, I guess it is, huh," Ava replied flatly, looking out the window.
"Hmm?" Kain said over his sandwich
"So Kain, do you have anywhere you're trying to get to or somewhere you want to go? Can you also give me a few details about who you're running from? It'll just make my life easier when they come knocking at my door and I can fool em' or throw em' out the window," Kye laughed a little at the last part.
Kain chuckled too then dropped it and was serious "Scientists. and I have no idea why they need me or where to go"
