Aidan’s eyes went wide. “We have to help them somehow.” He hissed to Lachy. His mind was racing as his eyes scanned the area, desperately trying to think of a plan. His hand started tapping against the side of his thigh as he did so.
Lachy bit his lip, glancing between the fighting and Aidan before he sighed, "Go, I'll cover you." He said, "Try and take them down."
He nodded. The only decision left now was whether to try and get behind them or a full frontal assault. He decided the first one was his best bet. He turned to Lachy. “I’m going to try and get behind the guys shooting at us, think it’ll work?”
Lachy thought about it for a moment, bouncing on his heels, "How are you going to get behind them? You've gotta cross the river first.." There was a loud bang and then a hiss, Sasha falling to the ground clutching her side.
“Fair point fair point. Whatever we do, we have to do it fast. And it’ll probably work best if we do it together.” With more people on their side getting injured, he knew they only had a handful of minutes to initiate their plan.
"I can try and blind them, giving you time to cross the lake. But I can't hold it for long since well… last time I did I fainted." A bullet hit the other side of the tree, dangerously close to Aidan's leg.
He nodded. “Don’t strain yourself too much. I’ll be fast, promise.” He managed to smile at Lachy reassuringly. “I’m ready whenever you are.” He mentally started mapping out the route he’d take to get there.
Lachy nodded back. He didn't move at first, waiting for the right moment. He twisted round the tree, letting out a massive burst of bright, white light directly at the enemy group.
And then Aidan was gone, sprinting as fast as his legs would allow. He knew his time was limited, and if he slowed down he was gonna be screwed. But he managed to make it all the way to behind enemy lines.
The enemies didn't notice. The light coming from Lachy made them squint their eyes closed, stumbling around trying to find each other. The light faded a few moments later, leaving an out of breath, defenseless, Lachy on the other side.
He couldn’t risk letting Lachy get hurt, so he knew he had to move fast. Without any further thought, he set his right hand ablaze. He shot it at the first guy, hitting him square in the back.
The man let out a scream, falling to the ground not a moment later. One of the other four squinted, slowly getting their eyesight back as they aimed again at the other side, shooting erratically in an attempt to hit someone.
Aidan had to get a bit closer to the next man to ensure his accuracy. He moved quickly, more flames already forming. Once within range he didn’t hesitate to eliminate this man in the same way as the first.
He went down within a second, sending twigs and leaves flying as he hit the ground hard. However he'd done enough damage to Gareth that it didn't matter. The other three were slowly coming to their sense, turning towards Aidan and firing.
“Well fuck” He grumbled before attempting to get to some form of cover. At this rate, he might have to completely set himself ablaze. He’d been trying to avoid that, mostly because he didn’t want to accidentally set off a forest fire but it appeared he had no choice.
One of the three turned back around, knowing that there was still one person on the other side that was not dead or injured. There was another burst of bright light, then another though not as deadly as the other. The other two kept firing on Aidan.
He forced himself to focus, feeling the tingling sensation of the flames traveling up his body until he knew he was completely coated in them. Only then did he step out of cover, continuing his attack, hoping to take the remaining people down as soon as possible.
The one with their back turned went down first, firing one last shot across the river before he fell with his other companions. The other two fell shortly after, one trying to run away only to only get a few meters before he, too, fell with the others.
Aidan would carefully check to make sure they were all deep fried and not waking up anytime soon before he made his way back across the river. “Lachy?” He called out. “Are you okay?” He’d lost track of him in the last few minutes.
Lachy was hunched over Sasha, holding her hand right before he body went limp with the dogs. He didn't reply to Aidan, simply staring at the older woman who was lying underneath him. He hadn't been able to save her in time.
He silently made his way over to Lachy, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder (of course making sure that all the flames were gone first). “It’s not your fault, Lachy. You did what you could.”
Lachy shook his head, pushing Aidan's hand off his shoulder, "No, no you don't get it. I could have saved her if- if I knew how to use all my powers and didn't get drained so quickly. If I hadn't used my power the second time she might be alive right now."
He fell silent, trying to find a way to console him that wouldn’t make Lachy feel more guilty. “I’m sorry, I should’ve moved faster..then you wouldn’t have had to use your power again.” He said softly.
"It's not your fault," He mumbled, standing and wobbling terribly on his feet, "We need to move.. Sasha she… she told me where to go before she…" He swallowed.
“Is everybody else gone too?” He asked softly, only now realizing how quiet it had become since all the action was over. He’d been hoping that at least one of the others would’ve survived.
