Kit trilled weakly at the petting, melting into the gentle touch. "If you're sure… I just don't want to be—" He interrupted himself with a yawn, "—a problem…"
"It's a good thing that's what you want," Marin said softly, a small smile tugging at their lips as Kit yawned. "Because you haven't been, not at all. You've been very helpful, thank you." The mage tucked Kit against their chest, pulling the blankets up around them.
"Mm… I'm glad you think so…" He mumbled in reply, huddling up against Marin to share their warmth. It didn't take him long to drift off to sleep in their arms. He had obviously been pretty exhausted.
Marin stayed awake as Kit dosed off, gently running their fingers through the small boy's hair. They didn't say a word, just watching to make sure Kit was okay, and that if another storm rolled in they would be awake to help him this time.
Kit slept for a few hours, stirring again around noon. "Mmm…" He curled up tighter and winced a bit, starting to tremble lightly. His breathing grew noticeably more shallow, and he seemed uneasy.
Marin looked down when they noticed Kit was trembling, pulling him closer.
"Hey," the mage said softly, nudging Kit to wake him up, "Hey I've got you."
Kit stirred and whined softly, opening his eyes after a few seconds. He was a bit pale and shaky, but otherwise fine. "Mm…?"
"Bad dream?" Marin asked. They pulled Kit closer, hand going to run through his hair.
Kit nodded weakly and buried his face in Marin's chest, still trembling. "Y-Yeah… I'm fine, though… it's… it's nothing."
"It's not nothing," Marin soothed, wrapping their arms more around Kit. "You're shaken by it." The mage hummed softly, resting their head on Kit's.
"It's just the same one as always, with Koa. It's stupid, don't worry about it…" Kit sighed shakily, wrapping his tail around one of Marin's legs. "It happens all the time."
"It's not stupid," Marin said softly. They looked down at Kit, glancing at the tail around their leg before pulling Kit closer.
"Especially if it happens all the time." The mage spoke softly, running their fingers through Kit's hair.
"Mmm… I-I guess that's bad, then?" He asked softly. "To… to have the same bad dream over and over?" He leaned into Marin's gentle touch and drew in a harsh, wavering breath.
"It's… it's not bad," Marin explained softly. "Your mind doesn't know what to do with it, or how to process what happened." They patted Kit's back, humming softly.
"Mm… how do I get my mind to process it, then? I don't… I-I don't like the dreams…" He whispered weakly. "And I don't wanna have them anymore…"
"It… well, it takes time," Marin said softly. "We've got to work through it." They weren't sure how Kit's parents could let him suffer like this for so long… It broke their heart a bit.
In all honestly, Kit had never talked about this kind of thing with anyone in his family. He knew they were sad about losing Koa too and suspected they might blame him for his disappearance, so he never felt brave enough to bring up how he was feeling about it. "But it's already been years…" He whispered weakly. "I-I want it to go away…"
This poor boy… Marin held him close, gently rubbing his head.
"I know," they said softly. "I know… Remember how I told you we could work on it yesterday? We'll do that soon, I promise." Now wasn't a good time, though.
Kit nodded weakly, leaning into Marin's hand a bit. "R-Right… okay… we can… we can do that. I gotta fix myself…" He mumbled, stammering and still seeming tense and uneasy. "I'm gonna be fine… I'm gonna be fine…"
"We'll fix you up," Marin promised softly. They held Kit close, still gently rubbing him. "You really are going to be okay…" The mage didn't know why they felt so attached to Kit, or his struggles.
Kit nodded again, trying to get himself to calm down so that he and Marin could get moving again. "I'm… I'm sorry…" He whispered shakily. "I'm wasting our time again…"
"You're not wasting time," Marin soothed, holding the child to their chest. "We can take a day to rest and gather ourselves for the journey to come. It's okay, Kit, I promise."
"Are you sure?" He asked weakly. "I-I really don't wanna slow us down… I can keep going, I swear!" He insisted, looking up at Marin. "I-I'll be fine!"
"I'm completely sure," Marin said, not moving from their spot. "You're not slowing us down at all. I've needed to take a day off, too. It's okay, Kit." The mage held Kit close, patting his back.
"I… o-okay…" Kit buried his face in Marin's shoulder and wrapped his arms around their neck, sighing again. "I'm still sorry for being so problematic, though… you probably would be having an easier time if you had a more experienced guide…"
