"It storms almost every night this time of year, though… it sucks." Kit sighed shakily and buried his face in Marin's chest.
"It storms almost every night this time of year, though… it sucks." Kit sighed shakily and buried his face in Marin's chest.
"Yeah, it does…" Marin ran their fingers through Kit's hair again, humming softly. "And if it does, I have ways of keeping us dry. I'll be there for you, too, so you're not going to have to go through it alone."
Kit nodded weakly, holding tighter to Marin. "T-Thanks… I just wish storm season would be over sooner…" He said weakly. "It always seems to last so long…"
"Mhm… things that hut like this seem to last a lot longer than other times…" Marin hugged Kit close, patting his head.
"Mhmm… is there a way to stop being scared of storms?" He asked softly. "I-I don't wanna be scared of them anymore, but I can't…"
"We're gonna work on that together, remember?" Marin said, voice soft. "I'm going to help you not be scared anymore, but it's going to take time."
Kit nodded again and sighed. "Whenever it storms I just wish I couldn't think anymore… my mind gets all fuzzy and it freaks me out a lot…"
Marin nodded. They'd seen how Kit reacted to the storms. The mage tucked Kit closer to their chest.
"I know," they said softly.
Kit huddled up against Marin, sighing shakily. "But I'm sure I'll be fine… I'll get over it… I'm just being dumb."
"You're not being dumb," Marin said. They kept their voice soft, tucking their chin on top of Kit's head. "You're not going to 'get over it,' you're going to work through it. There's a big difference."
Kit sighed again, screwing his eyes shut. "It feels s-stupid, though…" He said weakly. "Being scared of storms… it's just some rain n' stuff…
"Remember what you told me?" Marin said softly. "You have a really good reason to be afraid of storms, it's not stupid."
Kit looked up at Marin weakly. "B-But storms happen all the time around here… I should be used to them by now, right?"
"Fear doesn't always make sense, Kit. I had a friend, a long time ago, who was afraid of the dark. It gets dark every night, but that didn't stop her from being scared." Marin got a faraway look in their eyes for a moment, being brought back by Willow lightly patting their hand.
"I-I guess so…" Kit hiccuped weakly and held tighter to Marin. "I just… I can't get it out of my head…" He whispered. "I can't stop… thinking…"
"I know," Marin said softly. "I know, I know how much thinking can hurt like that." The mage held Kit closer in turn, rubbing small circles into his back.
Kit buried his face in Marin's chest, fidgeting with his hands. "I'm sorry… I-I'm being problematic…" He whispered. "You shouldn't have to deal with me…"
"You're not," Marin said softly. "You're not being problematic, I promise." The mage ran their fingers through the boy's hair, humming softly. "I want to help, Kit."
"Why do you wanna help me…?" He asked weakly. "I-I didn't really do anything to deserve it, and… and it's not your job to help me or anything. You don't have to…"
Marin was quiet for a moment as they tried to think of a way to explain Kit could understand.
"I've seen so many people in my life hurting," Marin finally admitted. "I don't like it when there's someone I can help, but I don't. You don't have to deserve help, Kit…"
Kit glanced up at Marin, his eyes shining. "But… I do." He said weakly. "It's my job to help humans. I'm not supposed to need help."
"Everyone needs help at some point." Marin cupped Kit's head, holding him closer. "It's okay to need it."
Kit sighed shakily, going weak in Marin's arms. "M-Maybe they were right…" He whispered. "Maybe they were right that I… couldn't do this."
"You can do this, Kit," Marin said. The mage pulled their cape around them both, running their fingers through Kit's hair again.
"You're going to be able to do this, I'm sure."
Kit leaned into Marin's hand and closed his eyes again. "It's not normal for fairies to… to become guides at my age…" He said softly. "B-But I insisted that I could do it."
