"I'm sure he would've been perfectly content to stay in New York if he didn't like you. He doesn't generally want to live with people he doesn't like, you know."
"I'm sure he would've been perfectly content to stay in New York if he didn't like you. He doesn't generally want to live with people he doesn't like, you know."
"R-Really?" Matthew's face slowly continued to go red, and he couldn't help but feel like that made things better.
"Yes, really. Who would leave everything they know to live with somebody they don't even like?"
"T-That's true…" Matthew's face settled into a soft blush that looked like it wasn't going to go away for a while.
She smiled softly as she looked up at him and kept walking. "You'll have to accept the fact that he likes you at some point."
"Some point… j-just, maybe not now." Matthew glanced away, still red.
She rolled her eyes a bit. "Very well. You're welcome to be as stubborn as you like, but you'll have to admit it eventually."
"I'm just not sure I'm ready to yet," Matthew admitted. "I've never… had someone feel that kind of way for me." Or he them.
She shrugged. "I guess I can understand that. I recommend not waiting too long, though, or he might start doubting himself.
"Understood." Matthew nodded once, looking over at Rowan's mother. "I'll do my best to do this in time."
She nodded a bit and kept walking. "Not to pressure you into anything, of course, but he does really like you."
"Mm… I really like him too." God, Matthew hoped Rowan hadn't woken up and was listening, he'd probably die.
Thankfully for Matthew, Rowan was still very unconscious. "Well, you're welcome to try telling him. I'm sure he'd appreciate it."
"I'll work up to it," Matthew promised.
She nodded again. "Sounds good. How far will we be going today?" She asked.
"Hopefully, as far as we can. I think the sooner we're back to the village, the easier it might be for Rowan to accept some rest." Matthew wanted Rowan to be able to lay down in a big, comfy nest, and just truly sleep away the leftover effects of the venom and poison.
"That makes sense, yeah. It'll do him some good to be in a proper bed considering all this. I'm sure sleeping out in the wild can't be super great for your health."
"Well, for some things it can be good," Matthew said. "Buuut, when the thing you're recovering from is nature hitting you over and over, yes, ma'am, a good bed is exactly what you need."
"Mhmm. And he needs the best sleep he can get." She hummed softly as she walked.
"He really does," Matthew agreed. "I'm just glad he lets himself sleep in my arms as we walk."
"Well, I'm not sure he intends to, but it's good that he's sleeping regardless."
"It is," Matthew said, nodding his head. "And I'm glad he trusts me enough to do this, even if he doesn't mean to."
"True. He definitely trusts you with his safety." She smiled gently. "It's good that he's getting rest, even though he doesn't want it."
"It's very good indeed. He needs all he can get, especially with how he acts when he's awake…" Matthew chuckled weakly.
"Yeah. He's going to keep wanting to push himself. Something about how he'll 'never get better if he never does anything'."
