"Yeah, sure… what are we having for breakfast?" He asked curiously.
"Yeah, sure… what are we having for breakfast?" He asked curiously.
"Bread, again. Hopefully some fruit as well, if we have any left." Matthew hummed, leading Rowan back to camp and his mother.
"Alright… sounds fine." Rowan yawned a bit and sat down once they got back to the camp.
Matthew moved over to the remains of the fire from the night before, stoking the flames back up as he looked in the bag for breakfast.
Rowan looked through the plants he'd come back with and hummed softly, tasting the leaves of one of them.
The leaf had a soft texture to it, tasting sour when resting on Rowan's tongue but sweet once he started chewing. Hopefully he'd remembered which leaves Matthew had said were okay to eat…
"Hm…" Rowan hummed softly to himself and set the plant he'd tried over to one pile. He tried the leaves of another one, which tasted very sour and bitter and made him feel queasy. "Ugh…"
Matthew looked over, blanching some when he saw what Rowan stuck in his mouth. The avian reached into the bag, quickly getting out their water.
"Rinse your mouth out," He instructed, hurrying over. "Did you swallow?"
"U-Um, a little, yeah… why? Is that bad?" Rowan asked nervously, taking the water so he could spit out the rest of the plant in his mouth.
Matthew's lips pressed together, and he nodded some.
"We need to induce vomiting, then, if the plant doesn't do it itself."
Rowan paled a bit, definitely not looking forward to that. "O-Oh, um… I… I don't know how to do that…" He stammered.
Matthew was serious, looking around.
"I don't have any medicine that can do it… We have to do it the hard way." Matthew turned to Rowan, raising his hand.
"Open your mouth," he instructed, trying to keep calm for Rowan's sake.
Rowan paled further, seeming very reluctant, but did as he was told. He had started trembling by this point, tense and ghostly white, and he was already feeling nauseous and dizzy.
"It'll be over quick, I promise." Matthew reached up, putting his fingers in Rowan's mouth. He reached back until he hit the skin hanging down from the back of his throat, then pulled his hand out as Rowan's gag reflex kicked in for him to puke.
Rowan choked and gagged, shaking violently and coughing for a couple of seconds before he threw up. "Nngh…" He coughed again and rubbed at his mouth, tears stinging his eyes and rolling down his cheeks.
Matthew rubbed Rowan's back, offering him the water once he had puked.
"Here, rinse your mouth out with this," the avian said softly.
Rowan nodded weakly and drank the water, his eyes still pooling with tears from the burning. "W-What would it have done to me if we didn't get it out…?"
"It's a slow-acting poison," Matthew explained quietly. "It'd… shut down your liver." Matthew helped Rowan clean off, pulling the man close.
"New rule; no more putting anything in your mouth unless I say it's safe to eat, okay..?"
"O-Oh… okay…" Rowan huddled up in Matthew's lap, still trembling lightly. He felt weak and drained, and his hair was a bit disheveled.
Matthew held Rowan close to himself, gently rubbing his back.
"I've got you… things are okay, you're okay now…"
"Mmm…" Rowan buried his face in Matthew's shoulder, weakly gripping the other's shirt. "I-I'm sorry…"
"Shh," Matthew said softly, pulling Rowan close. "Shh, it's okay, Rowan. I'm the one who told you these plants were safe, I should have been more specific. I'm sorry, sweetie…"
Rowan coughed weakly and held tighter to Matthew. "I-It's okay… I should've left the bad one behind… I thought I did…"
"I thought so too," Matthew said softly. "I've got you…" The avian kissed Rowan's head, pulling him right up flush against his chest.
Rowan closed his eyes, huddling up against Matthew's chest with a shaky sigh. He just allowed himself to be held, knowing this was his fault.
