"Rowan, where are you?" Matthew called in turn. It was faint, but he thought he had heard Rowan reply. He started walking, hoping it was the right direction.
"Rowan, where are you?" Matthew called in turn. It was faint, but he thought he had heard Rowan reply. He started walking, hoping it was the right direction.
"I'm okay…" He called back. "Just in the forest…" He leaned back against a tree and sighed. Great, you worried him…
Matthew followed Rowan's voice as best he could, finally finding the man.
"You okay?" The avian asked, kneeling down by Rowan's side.
"Yeah, I'm fine… just went looking for some of those plants you mentioned and got tired… are any of these poisonous?" He asked weakly.
Matthew let out a breath, moving to sit with Rowan. He wasn't going to baby the man, he knew it would just upset him more. Instead, he slipped his hand into Rowan's, looking over the plants that had been gathered.
"Hm… you did really good," the avian started with. "Only this one is dangerous." Matthew moved the plant away, giving Rowan a sweet smile.
Rowan held tightly to Matthew's hand when it was offered to him, watching as Matthew sorted through the plants. He nodded upon being told that one of them was poisonous. "Okay… so the other ones might make nice drinks?"
"Hmm…" Matthew thought, looking at the remaining plants. "This one has a bitter taste unless it's cooked, most people fry them but it could do well when boiled… not to mention, the flowers of this plant are very sweet, and when pressed, they produce a syrup. That could work in a drink, right?"
"Yeah, syrups and stuff would work. And coffee is pretty bitter on its own without creams and such in it, so the bitter one might still work."
"Okay, then." Matthew offered a smile, turning back to the remaining plants.
"This one gives a lot of energy when chewed," he said, pointing. "And this one messes with your head some, placates you, and makes you feel good." And got you high as a kite.
Rowan nodded a bit as he listened. "That sounds like a drug… I probably shouldn't use it in drinks." He laughed weakly.
"Really?" Matthew tilted his head some. "A lot of people enjoy the effects of the plant, but if you think you shouldn't use it I won't push."
"Well, I know people like it, but the effects of drugs can be addictive… if you take too much of them, you can lose control of yourself or even overdose and die from them. People have done a lot of bad things under the influence of drugs in my world."
"Oh… that does sound bad," Matthew agreed. "Most people don't usually eat this plant more than once or twice a year, but I'm glad no one has gotten addicted."
"Yeah… they can be really bad for you if you take too much of them, and I don't wanna be responsible for that. What about these other plants?"
"Well, the leaves on this plate are sour," Matthew said, looking over the plants remaining. "And the bulbs of this one taste really savory, especially when made with the stems. Oh, and this plant here, the petals are covered in tree sap to make sweet and sour treats for children."
"Hmm… alright. I guess I can experiment with some of these." Rowan sighed softly as he looked at the plants. "I'm not entirely sure how, though… I've only ever made coffee."
"Well… that's just it, it'll be experimenting. We'll try a lot of different things, and see what works!" Matthew smiled some.
"Yeah. Hopefully we don't poison ourselves or anything…" Rowan sighed softly.
"Well…" Matthew hummed, thinking a moment. "We could stick with things I know are safe to prepare certain ways, and then when we get back to the village I can talk to my cousin. His abilities let him work with poisons, so we could figure out a system to figure out if something is poisonous or not."
"Oh, okay… what's his ability?" Rowan asked curiously, shakily and unsteadily getting to his feet with the plants bundled up in his arms.
Matthew stood as well, gently putting an arm around Rowan to keep him steady."
"He can manipulate poisons and venoms. I'm thinking, if he can control something we make, then we probably shouldn't serve it."
"Alright. I guess he'd be willing to do that for us, then?" He asked softly, keeping a firm hold on the plants while he walked. "I don't exactly have any money I can pay him with…"
"He will be," Matthew assured. "I'll ask him to do it. And no money needed! We don't really use it in the village accept for goods."
"Interesting." Rowan hummed thoughtfully to himself as he slowly walked along, still pretty unsteady on his feet.
Matthew kept his arm around Rowan, helping him to walk instead of picking him up as they headed back to the camp.
"So, while we work, how does breakfast sound?"
