I have to take public speaking next semester and I'm loathing it. I already had to take a communications class and I didn't like that and I'm a horrible public speaker so I'm not ready

That's why you take the class, To get better.
I know as a society we are generally raised to want to do things perfect on the first try, but that is in no way realistic and can be an extremally harmful and counterproductive mind set to have. you're not taking the class to prove you're good at it, you're taking the class to improve. That's the whole point, to get better at something you aren't good at. I mean If you were already good at it then you'd be paying for a class that's just a waste of your time.

I have a professor next semester who grades more harshly the later you turn in the assignment. He is the Devil, I respect him and his teaching style but still.

Lots of practice, professors who will look at your papers and destroy them before you turn them in, and good relationships where you communicate and think on ideas with the same professors who can provide guidance and tough love when you talk to them.
