"Not at all. It was like grinding my teeth with an electric sander." He smiled. "But Angel's a cutie."
"Not at all. It was like grinding my teeth with an electric sander." He smiled. "But Angel's a cutie."
"I know, I love her." She grabbed his hand and moved them so they were out of the view of the others. "Thank you," she said softly, slipping both her hands in his. "For being here. And pushing me to come."
"Of course," he said with a smile. "It's what I'm here for."
She returned his smile. "I love you," she whispered. Don't need the adults Oooing and Awwing.
"I love you too," he said, lightly pecking her on the lips.
Her smile grew, then turned into a scowl as Zeus yelled, "No making out, kids!"
"Zeus! I'm gonna kick your Hawaiian ass!"
He snorted, hoping he wasn't blushing too hard. "When's the food gonna be ready?"
Zeus popped his head in the living room, his big brother intuition finding them quickly. "Right about now."
"Well, what are we standing around for? Let's go eat."
Tess took off after Zeus, who laughed and ran around the dinner table, putting the piece of furniture between the two.
Runner ignored the two, instead heading into the kitchen.
Spread out along the table was slices of ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, ham and potato soup, and plates of snickerdoodle cookies for dessert. Empty plates and silverware were set up. Ben came up behind Runner. "Help yourself. We're not a very fancy family," he chuckled.
He gave him a smile. "Thank you, sir. Where would the plates be?"
He reached in the cabinet, pulling out enough plates for everyone. "Damn kid can cook like a pro, but he always forgets the food needs to be eaten in a civilized manner." He sounded more amused than anything.
"He had me cook Tess some food once. Probably what won her over," He said with a smile.
Ben chuckled. "That girl sure does love her food. Goes straight to her heart, it does. Kids! Time to eat!" He grabbed a plate for himself and sat down, dishing food onto it.
Runner followed suit, grabbing ham and mash potatoes and plopping them onto his plate.
Tess strolled in, looking accomplished, and Zeus slunk in after her. Angel thundered down the steps, screaming to leave her some food. Alex followed her, albeit a little quieter and slower.
Runner sat down in between two empty seats, immediately digging into the food.
Tess scooped up a plate and piled on the food, not shy about being a hog and starving. She sat next to Runner. Diana finally entered the kitchen, smiling at the kids and sitting down as well. Soon, everyone was eating peacefully.
God, I hope there's no more awkward questions for me, he thought as he gulped down a spoonful of mashed potatoes.
"So, Tess," Ben said. "I've heard from Rawling that you're planning something big, eh?"
She nodded. "Mhmm." She had a mouth full of ham, so she couldn't speak.
He hid his smile with his fork. "I bet Diego was happy to see you. That boy adores you."
She just about choked from the words, but thankfully didn't.
Runner tilted his head. "Who?" He didn't sound jealous, just curious.
Diana answered him. "Oh, just a fellow member of the Rawling crime family. One of the ones who helped take care of Tessa. He's young, for his position, but he's good at his job."
"Gotcha," he said, taking another spoonful of mashed potatoes.
