He nodded, standing up from the bed. "How do I look?" His hair was still an absolute mess.
He nodded, standing up from the bed. "How do I look?" His hair was still an absolute mess.
"Splendid," she said, clapping her hands together.
Runner snorted. "Alright, then let's head out."
She stifled a groan. "I don't wanna go…"
"Man, I already changed, though." No way she was gonna outwhine him
She pulled out the portal crystal and took them to the part of New York City that her parents lived, pouting the entire time. Sometimes dirty kids in alleyways or sitting on the sidewalk gave her dirty looks as she passed by.
"If it starts getting heated we'll leave immediately," he promised as they walked.
"Everything around me is heated. It's just a matter of time until something explodes." It was a weak attempt at a joke. She felt all the disapproving looks of hurt and betrayal and hate.
He squinted at the people looking at them, contemplating bursting into hellfire to scare them off.
"Don't," she muttered. "They have a right to be mad. They have nothing else to live for," she added, "besides survival and trust."
He decided a topic change would be best. "Where is the restaurant, again?"
"No restaurant. My mom's house," she grumbled. "Shoot me now."
"It'll be fine, Tess." Maybe this was a mistake.
They reached a cozy looking home, and Tess knocked on the door. By the third knock, the door was flung open and a little girl around the age of 6 or 7 squealed and launched herself onto Tess's legs. Her grin revealed missing teeth. "TETHIEEEE!!!" Tess looked too stunned to do anything about the blonde girl clinging to her leg for dear life.
He snorted at the sight, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
She glared at him, but crouched down and pulled the little girl in a hug, then pinched her cheeks playfully. "Hey, Angel! How's my favorite girl doing?"
Angel couldn't stop bouncing and grinning. "Better now that you here! LEXIE!! TETHIE'S HERE!!!" Tess's face seemed to sour.
"Should we walk inside?" he suggested, already not liking the look Tess had on her face.
Tess scooped up Angel and went inside, silently answering his question.
He followed her, shoving his hands deep into his pockets. Of course she has to act like this right now.
(I'm headed to bed. Already only have six hours of sleep left until school. Yay!)
(Alright, sleep well)
(Thanks)
They entered the living room, where a woman was sitting eagerly on the couch, hands wringing nervously. She had long blonde hair that reached her waist, bright blue eyes, and had a similar build as her daughter, though not quite as muscular. She jerked her head up when Tessa and Runner entered the house. "Tessa," she breathed, looking surprised and relived at the same time.
Runner scrunched up his shoulder, beginning to feel more and more awkward.
Tess set Angel down and took Runner's hand as she stared at her mom. "Mother," she said. "I'd like you to meet Runner."
Her mom stood and tried for a smile. "Hello, Runner. I'm Diana."
