"I would feel insulted if you weren't true." He sighed, knowing he had her on edge.
"I would feel insulted if you weren't true." He sighed, knowing he had her on edge.
She shifted again, rubbing her leg with her foot as if to relieve an itch. "Mm."
"I looooove you," he said in a sing-song voice.
She laughed. "What drugs have you been taking?"
"I can just tell my girlfriend I love her?" he challenged.
She shook her head, fighting back a smile. "You're quite… perky, all of the sudden."
"Ah, just feigning confidence for the fight coming up," he admitted.
She nodded, grimacing again. "Damn, this thing hurts like a bitch…" she muttered. To Runner, she said, "There's no one here to pretend around."
"Eh, but still. I don't feel like complaining for once, so I might as well fake it." He stretched his arms and legs out as far as they would go, yawning heavily.
"You could always just keep your mouth shut." Her eyes widened as soon as she said the words, and she looked away. "I'm sorry. That was mean."
He opened his mouth to say something, then faltered, opting instead to sit up and look away from her. "My bad, I guess."
She shook her head and got up too, facing him still wide eyes. "No, it's not you! Please, don't take it personally." She went to reach out, but curled her fingers into a fist and pulled her hand back. "I'm just… losing control."
Yes, losing control to the person you're so desperate to hide from your beloved, the beast sneered, curling its essence around her unguarded heart. Isn't it about time he sees you for who you really are?
"…Control?" he tilted his head. "From what?"
She actually winced and gripped her arm, where dark scales flickered to life and then gone again. "Someone I don't want you to see," she said softly.
"Do I have to remind you who's up here?" He asked tapping the side of his head.
She snorted, though she was no longer in the humorous mood. "I guess you'll see during the Games anyway, so it doesn't matter."
He shrugged, looking away from her again.
A shrill bell rang, and Tessa got up. "We'd better go. That's the warning bell. Games are about to start."
He got up with her, stretching again. We'll have to talk later, he tought to himself.
She quickly changed, throwing up a wall of fire so Runner couldn't see her, then grabbed his hand and took off down the halls towards the arena.
He hustled to keep up with her, anticipation growing in his chest as they neared closer and closer to the arena.
They made it just in time. The announcer from before screaming into the microphone about the first round of the War Games. "…contestants will circle the arena in their teams. Absolutely NO friendly-fire! Those of you who had the opportunity to get here by recommendations–congrats! You are on your own–loyal to no one. It's kill or be killed out there, people! Put on a good show! Oh, and if you're worried about actually being killed, there are protective spells around here to prevent that. Minor coma? High possibility. Death? Unlikely."
Tessa offered Runner a tentative smile as the students grouped up along the perimeter of the arena. "Good luck."
Everyone's gonna gun for me. He felt Tega stir in his mind, banging against his metaphorical cage. "LET ME GO!" he seemed to scream, "YOU NEED ME!"
The best Runner could offer Tess was a weak smile.
She gave him a two finger salute, then ran over to her team, which consisted of exactly 16 members. A total of five teams lined up, each with about thirty members–except the Vanguard–with a few individuals in between each group. The others like Runner who were not a part of the school. The thousands of students from the qualifications had dwindled down to just below 200.
Runner just fell in place, preparing to switch to his dragon as soon as the fight started. Just stay the hell out of everyone's way, he thought.
