Runner shrugged. "Alright, I guess." He followed her out of the store.
Runner shrugged. "Alright, I guess." He followed her out of the store.
She walked in silence, chewing at her thumb as thoughts spun through her head.
After a moment's hesitation, he walked up beside her. "I just don't feel….safe, I guess."
She flinched back, startled by his sudden appearance. She barely held back the instinct to swing. "Oh. Ah, yeah. Why do you think I'm going with you?"
"First, the attack three days ago, I'm nearly killed two nights ago, and now I'm being trailed? Something's going on."
Tess nodded, still partially distracted.
He frowned, rubbing his face. She's mad about something.
She was, in fact, not mad about anything. She was simply thinking–hard. She was thinking about the attacks on Runner. She was thinking about them–were they even a good match? He was a wanderer–a runner. She was a broken and needy girl who was tying him down and controlling his life. They were both independent, but lately they've become a little too dependent of each other. It wouldn't end up well in the long run. What if things continued the way they were? How would they be in the future? Would they do nothing but fight? Would she be the sole reason Runner was constantly found and attacked? Because she wouldn't let him leave? What if, what if, what if?
Runner glanced behind them for a moment, taking a quick breath before facing front again. "It's the same guys," he said between clenched teeth.
Even without Runner's sensing, Tess could feel the dark magic beading down upon them, breathing down their neck as they waited for the best moment to strike.
((Now would be a good time for Rhianon to come in and save them
Tess grabbed Runner's arm and pulled him close. "Act natural. Do not engage," she also said between her teeth as she smiled prettily up at him.
He gave her a wink of confirmation, although there was a slight bit of steam coming from the top of his head.
A tall woman approached them, wearing sunglasses and a blue long sleeved dress that brushed the ground and seemed to float on an invisible breeze as she walked. She spread her arms out like a loving mother finding her precious trouble-making children. "Ah, there you two are! I was wondering where you two silly birds flew off to." It was Rhianon's voice. She had put a glamour over herself, disguising what she could and hiding was she couldn't.
He gave her a forced smile. "Hey, mom. Wanna walk with us?"
Tessa smiled sheepishly, wrapping an arm around Runner's waist. "Hey Mrs Brunelli! Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I just had to steal him away from you for a second."
Rhianon flapped a hand. "No worries. As long as my little baby's with you, I know he's safe." She joined them, keeping a protective hand on Runner. "Now, what do we say to some ice cream, hmm? I found a nice little shop down the ways."
"Sounds great," he said loudly, then mumbled, "Three guys behind us. Big magic comin' off of them. Same guys who jumped me."
"I know," Rhianon mumbled. She led them farther down the street. "Miss Hunt," she continued in a whisper. "Do you happen to know of any… safe areas around here?" She proceeded to talk loudly, fawning over the city and the school and everyday things.
Tess nodded, acting like she was agreeing with her. "Two blocks from here. Left side. Between two really fancy restaurants."
He smiled along with Tess, putting a hand on his side exactly where he had been stabbed on the side. "They have enchanted weapons. Silver knives and something else that cut through a wall I through at them."
Rhianon cursed in her native tongue. "Faebane. Negates all kinds of magic." (I'm stealing the faebane from my fav author, so no credit is being taken)
(I have to eat, I'll be back when I'm done)
"So it has to be hand to hand?" he asked, putting an arm around Tess's shoulder with a smile. They're getting antsy…
Rhianon nodded. "Or I concoct some form of countermeasure against the faebane."
Tessa nudged the two over. "Right here." Directly to the left of them from across the street was a large and relatively clean alley between two restaurants.
"How are we supposed to play off going in there?"
"Hey guys, I know a shortcut." Tessa said out loud. "Follow me." She grinned and waved them over, darting across the street. Rhianon chuckled. "Ah, that girl is just full of energy." and quickly followed.
He followed last, feeling the three's blood go up. They're trying to kill me now.
As soon as all three of them were in the alley, Rhianon grabbed them both and stepped back. The world around them folded in on itself. Reality distorted and crystallized and shattered. Wind tore at them as it whispered in their ears. The birds sung backwards. And then…
And then nothing.
They were standing in an endless void. Odd creatures floated around and wondered the flat plane. Black grass swayed and crunched beneath their feet. The sky was a swirling and warping mixture of gray and white and black. It was neither dark nor light.
