Fae, relieved that she had gotten him in a talkative mood, continued. "When did you move here?" She took a bite of the warm butter-bread and looked down in surprise as the buttery, delicious taste filled her mouth. "This is good!"
Fae, relieved that she had gotten him in a talkative mood, continued. "When did you move here?" She took a bite of the warm butter-bread and looked down in surprise as the buttery, delicious taste filled her mouth. "This is good!"
He laughed a little at her delighted response to the pastry, answering her questions, "I was around eight years old. I came here with my uncle," he explained, "Or, tío," he informed her, "Él fue el tío mejor," he commented in a breath, "The best uncle," Cruz translated for her. "Was, at least,"
Fae froze, unsure what to say next. Flooded with something like sadness for her accomplice, she set down her lunch. "I'm sorry.". She lowered her hazel eyes.
He shrugged, dismissing the sensitive subject. "It's fine," he insisted.
Fae averted her eyes. "How long have you been working with Mr. Ponticelli?"
Sabine began playing a new song. She filled the air with her beautiful voice, wanting to give people hope. Hope. One of the most powerful and precious things in the world. She sang her heart out. *Fear he is a liar. He will take your breath, stop you in your steps. Fear he is a liar. He will rob your rest, steal your happiness. Cast your fear in the fire. 'Cause fear he is a liar…………
(*Disclaimer These are not my songs. They are just songs that have beautiful meanings that touched me. The first one is from a barbie movie I used to watch, and the second one is a song called 'Fear is a Liar')
"'Bout two years now," Cruz answered.
Fae took another bite of her scrumptious meal. "This is delicious!", she said. "I'm going to start coming here more often for sure." She nodded in acknowledgement of his statement. "You two seem really comfortable with eachother.", she replied, taking note of the garden shop across the street from them. "Do you think we could stop by there later?", she asked, finishing off the bread and moving on to the baklava. "I need to get… some friends a few flowers.", she finished lamely.
He laughed a little, "I'm fine with that," he commented back casually, taking a sizeable bite of his muffing and travelling his dark eyes to glance outside the partially shuttered window.
Fae smiled back and wondered which flowers she should buy for her friends at the hospital. She could also buy them some little trinkets from Mr. Ponticelli's shop.
"You look nice today." He commented.
Fae fought back a blush, but it was no use. Her cheeks turned bright red, and she averted her eyes again, bashful. "Th-Thank you.", she stammered. "I–I'm not— it's not like I'm wearing any makeup— I–I just—" She gave up, tugging on the edge of her side-braid. What would her grandmother say?
He laughed a little, softly, finding her flustered response quite cute, "Or, you know, in Spain, a more appropriate adjective would be bonita, querida.." he listed smoothly, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table.
Fae blushed again, feeding little pieces of her baklava to Smudge, Grace, and Leum, who all licked it up greedily, Grace cleaning her paws daintily on a napkin. Was Cruz flirting with her? Impossible. He was way older! Maybe even in university! Nerves aflutter –just like her wings–, she tried to quip back. "I'm sure you're quite the ladies man at your school!", she remarked, attempting to cover her flustered demeanor with a cheeky joke. Grace nudged her meaningfully with her tiny elbow, winking suggestively and wiggling her eye ridges.
(Where's Kennedy? I'm dying to know more about her life!)
He sputtered a laugh at Fae's suggestive little dragon, "I'm homeschooled, actually. Meaning I go to school on a computer and not in a building," he commented back, "But.. I'm sure you'd be right," he smirked, trying to cast a bit of charm.
Fae grinned. Are you still in high school, technically?”, she inquired, finishing her lunch and setting her plate politely aside.
"Yeah. I'm a Senior," he explained, crumpling the paper that the muffin had been wrapped in. "And you?"
(Btw I said earlier that Fae is 13 turning 14, oops. Revise that to 14 turning 15.)
"I'm still a freshman.", she replied ruefully, scratching her nose. Leum yawned and shuffled over to Fae's plate, slurping up the extra syrup noisily. Fae giggled. Apparently still hungry, he licked his lips and stumped over to Cruz's plate, pawing the leftover crumbs into a small pile and beginning to eat them up. "I've never heard the name 'Cruz' before", she commented. "What does it mean?", she asked, curious.
(Sabine is just going to keep playing music until Fae and Cruz get back so don't mind her.)
(beautiful music yay)
(maybe start on her backstory a bit?)
(Maybe)
As Sabine played her music, she thought about everything that had changed. Her tow older brothers, Benjamin and Samuel were in the military now. Her dad lost his job in Ashfield Point, Florida, (Not a real place) and then got a job here. She thought about her grandfather's last moments, and how she had promised to be a good role model and to help her parents. She remembered saying goodbye to her friends, and remembered how her mother had been worried about continuing law school. She remembered seeing her mother cry. Her mother almost never cried. She remembered feeling so useless and helpless. She remembered watching her brothers leave. She wondered if she'd ever see then again.
