"The world is full of questions that only a select few can answer, if any at all. It's a fine line to walk but some of us do it every day."
"The world is full of questions that only a select few can answer, if any at all. It's a fine line to walk but some of us do it every day."
“And it seems you aim to be one of them.” she observed. She wasn't judging, of course, but she still found it an interesting pursuit.
"Of course. The answers are out there, why wouldn't I want to find them? When so few do, I'll be one of the lucky ones."
“Very ambitious.” she said, admiring the fact that he had a goal while she had mostly just wanted to travel. To see and experience new things and to get away from others.
"But not all adventurers want answers. Some just want to be rid of society, whether it has wronged them or they're just bored. Sounds like you're closer to that sort of thing."
“Well, I wouldn't say I was bored.” she hummed thoughtfully. “Working at the inn was nice and came with its own adventures and challenges but…” she shrugged. “I don't know.”
"It's the usual. You expect it. There's only so much variety you can get there. I wouldn't call it bored. I'd say stuck in a routine."
Charlotte nodded at that, finding no argument with that explanation. “I thought I found a way to change my routine before… I didn't leave, obviously, but… It was just a mistake.” she sighed, holding herself a little tighter.
Rodney raised an eyebrow at her. "Oh? How so? Whatever it was doesn't sound good considering you were still there."
“If it's all the same to you, I’d rather not talk about it.” she murmured as she looked away from him. “It was a mistake but I stayed at the inn because it was… familiar. Comforting at the time, in a way.”
"Okay, we don't have to talk about it. There are some things that I don't want to talk about either, I get it."
“Thank you.” she sighed in relief. Maybe they could talk about these things later on… But for now, they didn't really know each other well enough. And the memory alone was still painful for Charlotte.
"Ah don't thank me. I'm just showing human decency. Thank me when I do something actually worth doing."
Charlotte gave a soft chuckle and nodded, uncurling herself slightly. “Well, I appreciate it all the same. And I won't push you to talk about… those things either.” she assured him.
"Thank you, that's nice to hear. We all have demons and skeletons in our closets we'd rather not talk about. Some more than others but all of us all the same."
“I'm sure. We wouldn't be normal if we didn't.” Charlotte nodded before letting out a soft giggle. “Though I wonder if that counts for Elves. They always seem so perfect.”
"Oh most definitely. Believe me, I've met quite a few elves in my day and they've all got something to hide. They're just a lot better at hiding it than the rest of us."
“That doesn't surprise me.” she laughed. “I haven't met many but the few I have… Honestly, the first time I did, I miss took them for a Fae.”
"You would think they are, wouldn't you. But no, and making such a mistake would land you in some very hot water with both groups so let's avoid doing that."
“Yeah. I was lucky that the Elf had a good sense of humor… and a couple of drinks.” she giggled again. “But I know enough differences now to not make that mistake again.” she nodded.
"That's good, that's good. I'd rather not have to save you from an angry tribe of elves and fae. That'd be such a headache."
“And here I was worried about saving you from one of them.” she teased, smiling playfully. “At least neither of us have to worry about that now.”
Rodney just laughed. "Oh no Charlotte. When it comes to dealing with other races, that's one of the last things you have to worry about when it comes to me."
Charlotte laughed with him. “Well, that's a relief. It would be awkward if we had to keep saving each other from those situations.”
"Yes it certainly would be. Rule of thumb, you leave them alone, they'll most likely leave you alone. It works pretty well."
