Charlotte nodded, rubbing her shoulder near her wing. It didn't really hurt but there was a slight burn. “I’m sure I’ll catch up but at least I don't weigh much to you.” she giggled.
Charlotte nodded, rubbing her shoulder near her wing. It didn't really hurt but there was a slight burn. “I’m sure I’ll catch up but at least I don't weigh much to you.” she giggled.
"Ah you say that now. I get some of the worst leg pains and I've been traveling for years. Believe me, you never truly get used to it. It just takes longer for the pain to set in."
Charlotte was a little surprised by that but gave a soft hum. “Well, then I will still catch up and be able to keep up for longer once I build up these muscles.” she pointed out. “But I do know some plants that can help with your leg pains.”
"Oh? Like what? Please, now I'm curious." Rodney hummed with a smile. Now he was curious how far ahead this girl could think.
Charlotte giggled. “Well, you already like one that I can think of… Chamomile. But ginger and cinnamon are also really good too.”
"Oh, of course. Anything that relaxes the body will help with pain, especially muscle cramps. Can't be in pain if the muscles can't contract."
“Exactly.” she grinned. “Aren't you glad that you have a fairy trained in herbal medicine as a companion now?” she teased, gently bumping against him.
He swatted her gently with a chuckle. "Yeah yeah, you'll be very helpful whether I like it or not. Though I will warn you, I'm a tough cookie and don't like to admit I'm injured so you'll definitely have to fight for some things."
Charlotte laughed, slipping off his shoulder to avoid his hand before settling back down. “Thanks for the warning. But if I have to fight you over your health, I will. Or just sneak the medicine into your food.”
"Mm, good luck with that. Unless you know which plants are edible out here, you'll just end up poisoning me." Rodney rolled his eyes with a playful smile. She was too cute, she really was.
“Of course I know!” she replied instantly. “I told you, my mom specializes in plants and I have some magic in that field too. I may not have your experience but I'm not completely helpless out here.” she smiled.
"Good. As fun as it'll be to expose you to my lifestyle of never staying in one place, I was not excited for having to keep you from getting yourself killed by the wilderness."
Charlotte shrugged a little. “I mean, I won't starve or freeze because of my fire magic… But I will still need your help in regards to wild animals and such.” she admitted. “I am bite-sized to most, I'm sure.”
"Of course, of course. I never said I wouldn't protect you. But having to explain nature to a new adventurer is like teaching a child and I've never had much patience for teaching."
“Ah… That's fair. At least, unlike a child, I have more interest in learning what I can about the adventuring lifestyle. And experience is always a good teacher, so I’ve heard.” she smiled assuringly, though she knew that not every experience was a pleasant one.
"Yes, that's very true. Although there are certainly some things that experience only makes worse. A doctor becomes numb to his work after seeing so much blood and suffering, is he still considered a hero? Or just a heartless slave to his craft?"
Charlotte's eyes widened at the surprisingly dark example. “I… I would have thought him still a hero. I never thought about becoming numb… I thought that seeing all that would make him more determined.” she admitted softly.
"Exactly. The world still sees him as a hero but does he consider himself a hero anymore? The same can be said for experience. Not all experiences out here are good and some should be avoided at all costs. Experience is the best teacher but there are some lessons you really don't want to learn."
Charlotte nodded, still a little thoughtful about the doctor they were talking about and a little concerned. “Yeah. I… I'm familiar with a couple of those kinds of lessons.” she admitted as she pulled her legs up to her chest and rested her head against knees. “I definitely learned from them… I just wish they didn't hurt so much.”
"My point exactly. I should say this now. If you ever want to leave, to go home and end this, you're perfectly welcome to. I'd never force you to stay here and you're always free to leave."
She rolled her head and looked up at him with a soft smile. “Thank you. I appreciate you saying that but I think I'm going to stick around for a while.”
"I'm holding you to that." He chuckled. "A while can mean a very long time out here. Time doesn't exist when everything looks the same other than the rising and setting of the sun."
“I suppose that's true.” she giggled with him. “But I have to ask, are you always so philosophical or am I just lucky today?” she smiled.
"I guess you're just lucky. The woods make me pensive. But that's not all that unusual." He laughed, shrugging the shoulder that Charlotte wasn't sitting on.
Charlotte laughed with him, her wings fluttering when she felt the gesture. Even though Rodney had delicately moved his other shoulder, there were still muscles in this one that moved. “Makes sense. There's so much to look at and wonder at. Gives you plenty to think about.”
